Job description
Overview

Endoscopy Junior Sister/ Charge Nurse at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. The closing date is 13 February 2026.

The post holder will be a clearly identifiable senior clinical staff member, and team leader. They will have significant clinical experience, provide sound clinical expertise to their team, and coordinate and deliver high quality care. They will be a role model for expert clinical care, and lead on specific projects / management functions as delegated by the Sister / Charge Nurse. They will role model the identified Trust values at all times.

Main duties of the job

In general settings, they will be the assigned deputy for their manager, generally known as a Junior Sister / Charge Nurse, coordinating clinical, managerial and education requirements of the area, and being a role model for team members, whilst delivering and overseeing high standards of care. In midwifery settings they will be called a Midwife.

In specialist settings, they will have a significant level of specialist clinical knowledge and expertise in the clinical functions of care delivery. They will provide advice and guidance also, and generally be known as a senior staff nurse.

Job responsibilities

Roles and responsibilities

Lead clinical care planning and assessment, implement high quality care, and evaluate care options for patients in the clinical area, in line with Trust values and objectives. Lead on complex clinical care for patients within their area. Ensure safe custody, maintenance and administration of medication, in accordance with Trust policy. Promote a safe therapeutic environment for patients, their families and staff, according to infection control guidelines, Health & Safety legislation and Trust policies. Coordinate discharges and transfers, ensuring timely and safe processes. Manage patient flow and bed management. Deliver high quality end of life care in line with national pathways and holistic palliative/terminal care. Provide evidence-based clinical advice to staff and patients. Understand and implement clinical escalation procedures. Participate in the Trust clinical governance framework and safeguarding of high standards of care through risk management and governance. Ensure adherence to safeguarding policies. Undertake multi-professional work with colleagues to deliver care. Coordinate and manage nurse-led clinics where appropriate. Monitor quality of care in line with CQC requirements and Trust objectives. Support a safe working environment and promote patient safety, including falls prevention. Lead on safeguarding detection, management and prevention. Stay informed on current professional and clinical developments within their area and promote this to others.

Leadership & Management

Manage day-to-day staffing and rotas to ensure safe practice levels. Act as shift coordinator when appropriate. Ensure staff adhere to Trust care protocols (e.g., Infection Control). Take responsibility for the ward/department in the manager\'s absence. Participate in on-call rotas. Lead and manage the clinical team and collaborate with other groups within the division and Trust. Contribute to area management by ensuring appropriate staffing levels and supporting off-duty rotas. Support induction/orientation of new staff. Act as a role model and supervise staff and learners. Provide clinical support and guidance, act as a knowledge resource, initiate action on complaints and incidents, and participate in recruitment and appraisal processes. Lead on projects as directed. Develop budget awareness and ensure resource use aligns with value and quality. Manage local change and embed new projects with the team.

Education & Research

Participate in education of learners within the area. Support preceptorship and supervision of students, including mentorship where appropriate. Identify learning needs and develop/coordinate local training. Facilitate informal teaching skills. Contribute to annual training needs analysis.

Apply and encourage evidence-based practice and research, identify local nursing/midwifery research opportunities, and promote research among staff. Participate in clinical supervision.

Professional Development

Maintain professional registration and mandatory training. Ensure appraisal is up to date. Develop and follow a professional development plan. Model Trust values at all times.

Communication

Ensure complex or sensitive communications are handled inclusively, focusing on improvement and forward movement. Present information appropriately to different recipients based on understanding and potential barriers.

Person Specification

Essential and desirable

  • Education and Qualifications – Registered Nurse (Adult); Diploma in Higher Education; post-registration qualification relevant to area of specialty or equivalent experience; teaching/mentorship qualification.
  • Experience – Relevant post-registration experience at Band 6 level; significant endoscopy experience in therapeutic procedures; wide variety of clinical experience; ability to lead a procedure room and coordinate sessions; experience of leading a clinical team; experience of teaching and supporting learners/new staff.
  • Skills and knowledge – Clinical knowledge linked to area of specialty; safety governance and risk management; leadership and deputising skills; excellent communication with patients, relatives, staff and external contacts; knowledge of current nursing challenges and issues; commitment to teaching, quality initiatives, and research; clinical decision making and prioritisation; computer literacy.
  • Personal qualities – Effective role model; values of safety, respect, kindness and excellence; enthusiastic, motivated, team player; self-starter; calm under pressure; patient advocate; approachable, respectful, supportive, adaptable and assertive; alignment with Trust values PROUD.
  • Physical requirements – Ability to work full shifts and weekends; able to work in environments with X-rays and wear lead aprons.

  • Experience – Senior Band 5 level with significant interventional endoscopy experience; experience in clinical supervision and management experience.
  • Skills and knowledge – Managing change; budgets; data collection for quality monitoring/audit; risk management/assessment.
