Job Summary

To be a Senior Sister/Charge Nurse for the Emergency Department (ED) working in partnership with the Matron, to manage and provide leadership to the nursing team in the provision of effective clinical and operational leadership across the ED.

To work collaboratively with the Lead Clinician and ED Manager, as well as the wider ED Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT), to continuously improve and develop the ED.

Main Duties of the Job

The Senior Sister/Charge Nurse takes overall responsibility and is accountable for all delegated nursing care within the clinical environment. They provide nursing leadership and are accountable for patient, public and staff experience, leading, offering expert clinical advice, and managing services to ensure the delivery of high quality, effective, compassionate nursing care. This will be in line with local, Trust‑wide and national policies, procedures, values and behaviours and is essential they can provide both clinical care to patients.

Pay scheme: Agenda for change

Pay: £47,810 to £54,710 a year pro rata pa

Person Specification
Education, Training & Qualifications
  • Essential: NMC Registration; Degree or relevant experience
  • Desirable: Experience in the Emergency Department setting at Registered Nurse level; ALS; APLS
Experience & Knowledge
  • Essential: Minimum of 3 years band 6 experience; Mentoring and developing staff; Minimum of 5 years ED experience; Experience working with paediatrics
  • Desirable: Post‑registration leadership qualification; Evidence of major incident training completion
Skills & Ability
  • Essential: Has overall responsibility and is accountable for all delegated nursing care within the clinical environment; Able to assess associated risks and take appropriate action; Manages the clinical workload, prioritising and re‑prioritising
  • Desirable: Work across division during unit cover and deputising for matron
