Electrical Design Engineer – Plymouth (Devonport Royal Dockyard)

Location: Plymouth, Devon

Hours: 50 hours per week (07:00 – 17:00)

Contract: Long-term project

Salary: Competitive, plus benefits

Clearance: BPSS required (UK residency for past 5 years)

About the Role

Carmichael UK is recruiting for an Electrical Design Engineer to join a leading infrastructure project at Devonport Royal Dockyard in Plymouth. This role offers a fantastic opportunity to contribute to one of the most significant redevelopment programmes in the South West, working within a highly regulated and technically complex environment.

You’ll be part of a small, collaborative team of consultants and project professionals, supporting the electrical design and delivery of key infrastructure within a live MOD facility.

Key Responsibilities
  • Work within a multi-disciplinary design team to support project delivery on a high-security site.
  • Review and comment on contractor and consultant electrical design documentation.
  • Liaise directly with clients, contractors, and consultants to ensure design coordination.
  • Attend site and off-site meetings as required.
  • Support problem-solving and contribute to innovative mechanical and electrical design solutions.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of current design standards and regulations.
  • Collaborate with external consultants, architects, civil and structural engineers to deliver coordinated designs.
  • Support the project team with documentation, technical queries, and reporting.
  • This is a hybrid role, typically working four days per week on-site and one day remotely.
About You
  • Qualification in a relevant engineering discipline (HNC, BSc, MSc, BEng, or MEng).
  • Proven experience as an Electrical Design Engineer, ideally within building services or large infrastructure.
  • Strong understanding of design documentation and familiarity with tools such as Amtech, AutoCAD, and Revit.
  • Excellent communication and coordination skills with a proactive, problem-solving mindset.
Desirable
  • Familiarity with RIBA and BSRIA Design Stage Deliverables.
  • Experience working on projects within highly regulated or defence environments.
Security Requirements

Due to the nature of the project, BPSS (Baseline Personnel Security Standard) clearance is required.
