Responsibilities
  • Provide safe and efficient transport of patients, medical records, equipment, specimens, supplies, and removal of waste as directed by the Portering Services Manager or the Duty Chargehand Porter.
  • Distribute clean linen to all wards and departments in an emergency out‑of‑hours service.
  • Collect and transport pathology specimens.
  • Collect medical gases from the store, transport to wards or departments, assemble where necessary, and change gas cylinders in manifold rooms.
  • Deal with general inquiries from staff, patients, visitors and members of the public in a helpful and courteous manner.
  • Carry out transportation of patients between wards and departments.
  • Remove deceased patients to the mortuary (assist with viewings as directed).
  • Perform departmental‑level duties as directed (A&E, X‑Ray, OPD, Pharmacy, Utility Services and Post Room).
  • Carry out general portering tasks such as furniture removals.
  • Assemble equipment such as beds, tables, etc. and store as necessary in the bed store.
  • Collect and record, in the appropriate ledger, blood products requested from the Blood Bank to wards and departments.
  • Carry the respective departmental bleep and mobile handsets as directed.
  • Assist in the event of a fire or hospital major security alert in accordance with relevant Trust policies.
  • Perform planned and ad‑hoc security duties as directed.
  • Check the identity of anyone arousing suspicion and report all incidents.
