A community sports organization is seeking a Disability Swimming Volunteer to provide 1-2-1 support for disabled swimmers during sessions at Abertillery Sports Centre. Overview

Job Title: Disability Swimming Volunteer

Location: Abertillery Sports Centre

Time Commitment: 1 hour per week (Thursday)

Reports To: Aquatic Development Officer / Community Sports Development Officer

Duration: Ongoing

Role Purpose

To provide 1-2-1 support for disabled swimmers during swimming sessions at Abertillery Sports Centre, helping them feel safe, supported, and confident in the water. Volunteers play a vital role in enabling swimmers to enjoy physical activity, improve their skills, and participate fully.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide tailored, 1-2-1 support to a swimmer with a disability in the pool (under supervision of a Level 2 Swimming Instructor).
  • Assist with water confidence, mobility, and basic swimming techniques.
  • Communicate clearly and positively with the swimmer to build trust and encourage participation.
  • Work closely with instructors and lifeguards to ensure the swimmer’s safety at all times.
  • Adapt support to suit the swimmer’s individual needs and ability level.
  • Help with poolside transitions (getting in/out of the water) as required and appropriate.
  • Encourage independence and enjoyment in the water.
  • Maintain confidentiality and uphold safeguarding practices.
