Job description
Overview

To assist the ward manager in creating and maintaining an environment in which the ward team can contribute to the maximum of their ability, delivering an excellent high standard of safe patient care, staff welfare and staff education/training.

This job is for an experienced surgical nurse who will deputise the ward manager in the running of our surgical specialties ward, which treats adult patients undergoing orthopaedic procedures/operations/investigations including joint replacements, upper limb surgery, foot surgery, sports injuries and minor ambulatory trauma surgery.

Responsibilities
  • Carry a senior nurse/site manager bleep to attend emergency situations and assist with site issues in the hospital.
  • Lead and cover a site rota to respond to emergencies (e.g., cardiac arrest) and manage site issues, taking charge and delegating tasks, and organising the clinical area.
  • Coordinate workload and staffing in advance to ensure adequate staffing and safe skill mix.
  • Accept delegated line management responsibilities of other team members, including performance reviews and personal development planning/actioning.
  • Ensure ward and trust policies, standards and procedures are followed at all times.
  • Assist in caring for patients pre- and post-surgery.
  • Work collaboratively with MDT members to provide the best possible care for patients.
  • Hold a senior nurse bleep for the hospital to lead in emergencies and assist with site issues.
  • Participate in joint school sessions to provide advice/education to patients prior to their surgery.
  • Participate in service improvement and the ongoing quality of care provision.
About the unit

The Captain Sir Tom Moore Building is part of a cold site and is the main ward for orthopaedic surgery and treatment services on the Halton General Hospital campus. The centre provides surgery ranging from hand and foot operations to hip replacement operations, along with sports injuries and other bone and joint care. It is located across from the main Nightingale Building. The centre was purpose-built for orthopaedic surgery and has a history of NHS/private collaboration and teaching activities. The majority of emergency care and complex surgical care is based at Warrington Hospital, with the Nightingale Building in Runcorn acting as a centre of excellence for routine surgery. The Captain Sir Tom Moore Building houses orthopaedic services. The organisation has a CQC rating of 'good' with 'outstanding' features and is progressing toward university hospital status, having achieved teaching hospital status in 2019.
