Overview

The Deputy Named Nurse will contribute to the strategic development and operational implementation of the safeguarding agenda across The Hillingdon Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. The post holder will support and work closely with the Named Professionals and multiagency partners to provide specialist advice on the management of safeguarding children, ensuring that children and young people and unborn babies who encounter services at the Trust are safeguarded and their welfare promoted in accordance with Department of Health guidance, Working Together to Safeguard Children, Laming Inquiry and the National Service Framework for children and relevant national recommendations and guidelines. The post holder will form part of a larger team of specialist safeguarding staff which includes Mental health, MCA and DOLs, adult safeguarding and learning disabilities, who work to support children and families within the Hillingdon Borough and bordering locations.

Responsibilities
  • Work in direct accordance with NMC Standards, Policies and Procedures alongside The Hillingdon Hospital trust guidance, polices and procedures.
  • Provide specialist knowledge and advice and guidance and be a point of contact regarding safeguarding Children and Young People and unborn aged 0-17 across the organisation, working in partnership with outside agencies such as CAMHS and Children's Social Care to ensure the best outcomes for children and families.
  • Assist staff across the trust in recognising and acting on their duty of care to protect children, young people and unborn who are at risk of potential or have suffered significant harm.
  • Raise awareness of the needs specific to adolescents, promoting recognition of differences in care in relation to adults.
  • Facilitate and provide safeguarding children case supervision in line with trust policy across the trust.
  • In collaboration with the Named Professionals, design, develop & deliver safeguarding children training based on training needs analysis and in accordance with legislation, national policies, and guidance.
  • Monitor, audit and evaluate multi-disciplinary child protection practice.
  • Support the process of ongoing research of safeguarding practices within the trust.
  • Contribute to Child Safeguarding Practice Reviews including reports, policies and guidelines ensuring learning is disseminated and recommendations for the trust are implemented.

The Trust's services at Mount Vernon Hospital include routine day surgery, delivered at a modern treatment centre, a minor injuries unit and outpatient clinics.

Responsibilities (continued)
  • Provide specialist safeguarding guidance, knowledge, and advice regarding safeguarding children, young people, unborn children, and adults, supporting all staff to manage safeguarding concerns/cases with robust, current guidance and high-quality evidence-based practices.
  • Ensure clear plans to manage safeguarding of children, young people, and unborn children, including recognising safeguarding concerns, referring to other agencies where necessary and adequate discharge planning.
  • Assist staff with their roles in responding to children, young people, and unborn babies at risk of harm by supporting, empowering, and promoting their development, competence, and confidence.
  • Work with staff to support professional challenges where safeguarding concerns have not been adequately addressed in line with trust policy.
  • Ensure the rights of children are upheld and their voices are heard.
  • Maintain an overview of all cases and referrals where safeguarding concerns have been identified, promoting safety and well-being.
  • Promote clear and accurate documentation and maintain comprehensive and contemporaneous records of care.
  • Assist with data collection as required in serious case reviews and in compiling the chronology of such children and families as delegated by the Named Nurse.
  • Identify to the Named Nurse for Safeguarding Children any practice areas or systems that may put patients or the Trust at risk and contribute to the setting and monitoring of standards in line with the National Service Framework for Children, Young People, unborn children and adults, ensuring alignment with NHS Improvement and CQC Essential Standards of Quality and Safety Assurance Framework.
  • Ensure personal practice is safe, within scope of competence and in line with NMC regulations.
Managerial Responsibilities
  • Act as a role model for all staff in promoting safeguarding and wellbeing of children and young people; uphold and demonstrate the Trust's CARES values.
  • deputise for the Named Nurse for Safeguarding Children as appropriate.
  • Provide guidance and advice to staff involved in safeguarding processes, including attendance at case conferences, strategy meetings, professionals' meetings and interagency meetings as directed by the Named Nurse.
  • Be an active member of the Trust Safeguarding Children Committee.
  • Assist with the compilation of the Trust's Operational and Annual Safeguarding Reports.
  • Support the effective use of resources and contribute to the delivery of the quality and operational agenda of the Trust.
  • Contribute to the design and delivery of a Trust-wide safeguarding children training programme in accordance with legislation, national policies and guidance.
  • Provide and record safeguarding supervision to staff working with children in line with Trust policy and national guidance.
  • Ensure learning from safeguarding incidents and Child Safeguarding Practice Reviews is disseminated; oversee action plans to implement recommendations.
  • Maintain own professional and clinical knowledge; maintain active NMC registration and up-to-date statutory and mandatory training.
Communication
  • Facilitate, enhance and promote clear communication between professionals involved in cases by effective verbal and written methods.
  • Communicate detailed health and welfare information to children, young people, families, and carers in an understandable way.
  • Communicate highly complex, personal, and sensitive information across professional and organisational boundaries in line with the Data Protection Act.
  • Maintain effective working relationships with colleagues at all levels.
Information Management
  • Utilise recognised information management systems to collect, analyse and report safeguarding activity to identify trends, workload, priority issues and future planning.
  • Contribute to safeguarding performance indicators, internally and to external agencies.
  • Be compliant with information governance policies and regulations.
Research and Service Development
  • Contribute to setting and monitoring standards for safeguarding children; audit processes against standards and facilitate changes in practice.
  • Use local and national data to inform practice, e.g., lessons from Serious Case Reviews.
  • Assist the Named Professionals in developing policies and guidelines to support effective safeguarding of children.
General
