NEW

We're looking for an experienced Data & Backend Engineer to join the Insights and Enablement team. This newly established team sits within Retail Media, part of Jet Ventures, and plays a pivotal role in shaping how we use data from our Customer Data Platform (CDP), enabling advanced audience segmentation, data visualisation, dashboards, and surfacing insights across Retail Media and the broader JET organisation.

This is not a typical Data/Backend Engineer – you'll work at the intersection of software engineering, data engineering and applied AI/ML, designing, deploying, and scaling production systems that bring advanced data science research to production. You'll partner closely with data scientists, product managers, analysts and engineers to transform prototypes into reliable, high‑performing services that deliver impact for advertisers and customers at scale.

We're seeking self‑starters, who are passionate about data, experimentation and emerging technologies in machine learning and AI, and as a senior member of the team, you'll do more than code – you'll help shape best practices, mentor others, and raise the technical bar.

Location: Hybrid – 3 days a week from our London office & 2 days working from home

Reporting to: Technology Manager

Responsibilities
  • Design and build scalable data pipelines and event‑streaming architectures with a focus on quality and reliability
  • Develop and optimise backend services, APIs, and databases to power segmentation, recommendation, targeting, and measurement
  • Apply solid data‑engineering principles – schema design, efficient storage and retrieval, streaming, and ETL/ELT, with a focus on top‑down/bottom‑up data‑modelling methodologies
  • Orchestrate complex data workflows using modern tools such as Airflow and dbt
  • Champion best practices for DevOps, DataOps, including testing, CI/CD, orchestration, and monitoring
  • Keep systems observable and healthy, monitoring for data drift, model degradation, and service reliability
  • Mentor engineers, share knowledge, and help the team grow stronger together
Qualifications
  • Experience as a Data Engineer and/or Backend Engineer with a track record of building and shipping large‑scale, real‑world data systems
  • Strong Python coding skills and a deep understanding of distributed systems and backend services
  • Strong knowledge of SQL and NoSQL databases such as PostgreSQL, BigQuery, Cassandra, or DynamoDB
  • Experience with large‑scale data platforms (e.g., Spark, Kafka, Flink, BigQuery) and cloud environments, with a preference for AWS or GCP
  • Expertise in data engineering – pipelines, modelling, batch vs. event‑streaming, and ETL/ELT
  • Demonstrated experience with modern data orchestration and transformation tools, including Airflow and dbt
  • Proven knowledge of data warehouse design and data lake architecture, with expertise in data‑modeling methodologies such as Kimball or Inmon
