Crane and Rigging Foreman
Purpose :
Colonnas Shipyard is seeking a Crane and Rigging Foreman to oversee the Rigging Shop in Norfolk, VA.
Position Summary :
First‑level on‑site supervisory role that assigns tasks, trains, and evaluates a team of semi‑skilled and skilled trades personnel based on their ability, experience, and job knowledge to support production in ship repair and industrial fabrication operations.
The position is located onsite in Norfolk, VA and will often require hours beyond a standard work week with flexible schedule availability to support production and operations. The position may also require limited travel.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities :
- Manages key activities in the employee lifecycle for all direct reports (timekeeping, job assignments, training, performance management, coaching/counselling, supervision, etc.) and ensures employees have all necessary tools, equipment, and procedures to work safely and efficiently.
- Breaks broader production strategies down into practical action plans to support safety, quality, cost, and schedule goals while monitoring job sites.
- Evaluates job sites and work environments prior to work starting to ensure safe project set‑ups and efficient work evolution.
- Responsible for understanding and complying with all technical aspects of the job, including adherence to contract requirements, drawings, procedures, work instructions, etc.
- Interprets company policy, enforces safety and environmental regulations, specifications, blueprints, sketches, and work orders to employees.
- Recommends measures to improve production methods, equipment performance, and quality of customer product.
- Suggests changes in working conditions and use of equipment to increase worker efficiency.
- Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws.
- Plans, assigns, and directs all work.
- Addresses complaints and resolves them as needed.
- Monitors and supports all shop projects, maintaining high quality, on‑time delivery, safety, and staying within budget.
- Understands and adheres to the defined scope of work.
- Follows company procedures regarding material procurement and return; pre‑plans equipment and material needs.
- Documents and maintains files of weekly toolbox safety training conducted.
Additionally, the position will :
- Provide daily updates to management to support POD development and execution.
- Review project specifications/SOWs and order all project materials in accordance with contract requirements and references.
- Generate and submit production reports meeting all technical and customer requirements to management.
- Ensure tools/resources are mobilized and demobilized from projects appropriately, providing updates on damaged or lost equipment.
- Be responsible for daily CPs, hot‑work permits, and project chemist certificate.
- Manage and initiate QA/customer calls out and attend/excute TIP inspections.
- Serve as backup/makeup to General Foreman as needed.
Required Qualifications :
- Must have a Bachelor’s degree or Registered Apprentice graduate, or high school graduate with at least 6 years of related trade experience (in the trade to be supervised).
- Must be able to understand job specifications, drawings, and corresponding technical references.
- Must have knowledge of weight testing in accordance with specified technical manuals for equipment such as cranes, davits, winches, anchors, anchor chains, shafts, and propellers.
- Must be familiar with OSHA and NAVSEA standards.
- Must have regular reliable attendance.
Preferred Skills / Qualifications :
- Some previous supervisory/mentoring experience (e.g., makeup supervisor).
- Knowledge of inspection procedures for structural components, booms, jibs, gears, drums, sheaves, blocks, hooks, operating mechanisms, hydraulic and pneumatic systems, hydraulic cylinders, wire rope, and operational aids.
- Crane signaling certification (mobile and overhead) preferred.
- Construction and crane company experience is highly preferred.
Security Requirements :
- Ability to obtain and maintain access to Government Facilities (DBIDS).
- Must be a U.S. Citizen.
Physical Requirements :
- Must be able to lift, carry, and transport heavy equipment and boxes. The exact weight requirements will be determined by the specific job but no less than 20 lbs.
- Must be physically agile to perform tasks in naval ships—able to work on and climb ladders, work in extreme temperature environments aboard ships and in shipyards under industrial conditions, and in confined spaces including entering and moving through manholes.
- May ride ships at sea for extended periods.
- Able to perform other duties as required which may involve high heat, humidity, noise, and dirty conditions working aloft or over the sides of vessels.
- Frequent exposure to noise due to machinery and equipment.
- Employee is required to operate trucks, forklifts, and man‑lifts.
- During job duties you may frequently be required to stand, walk, sit; use hands or fingers; handle or feel; talk; reach with hands and arms; climb and balance; stoop; squat; kneel; twist; and crawl.
- Work in extreme temperatures and conditions. At times you will work in areas that have less adequate ventilation.
- Frequent use of respirator.
- Protective clothing or equipment and face shields or goggles shall be worn when welding, cutting, or working with molten metal.
