Costs Lawyer (Civil Litigation) (Hybrid) - Full Time
Location: London, GL, EC1 7AJ

Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be working alongside the Senior Associate Solicitor in the civil litigation team to assist our fee earners in the Personal Injury, Clinical Negligence, Human Rights and International departments, with providing a complete costs service to include, preparation of costs budgets, statements of costs for summary assessment, formal bills of costs; costs negotiations; preparation for and attendance at costs management hearings and detailed assessment hearings; and providing general costs advice, guidance, and assistance.

Experience & Qualifications
  • Aspiring individuals must pass the Costs Lawyer Qualification Exam (CLQE)
  • To qualify as a costs lawyer, you need to complete the Level 6 Costs Lawyer Qualification, as well as a minimum of three-years of supervised practice, which can be taken before, during or after your study.
  • Costs Lawyers need to possess strong analytical thinking skills to assess and evaluate complex legal costs. They must be able to analyze invoices, bills, and other financial documents with precision, identifying any discrepancies or unreasonable charges. Their ability to think critically and spot inconsistencies is crucial in ensuring the fairness and accuracy of costs.
  • Effective negotiation skills are essential for a Costs Lawyer. They often find themselves in negotiations with opposing parties, seeking to reach agreements on costs that are fair and reasonable.
  • A law degree provides a comprehensive understanding of legal principles, which is crucial for a successful career as a Costs Lawyer.
