Job description

As a Corporate Lawyer, you will provide specialist legal advice and support across a range of employment law matters, both contentious and non-contentious. You will manage a varied caseload, advise on council powers and procedures, and ensure compliance with statutory obligations. This role requires strong advocacy skills, the ability to draft and amend policies, and a proactive approach to supporting colleagues and service areas.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide high-level legal advice and assistance on employment law matters.
  • Manage contentious and non-contentious employment cases, undertaking advocacy where required.
  • Advise on council powers, procedures, and ensure legality of decision-making.
  • Draft, amend, and advise on council policies to ensure compliance with law and best practice.
  • Attend committees and provide clear, proactive advice to officers and members.
  • Keep up to date with changes in employment law and provide training to colleagues.
  • Contribute to corporate policy and project groups, supporting service improvement.
  • Ensure compliance with GDPR, Data Protection, and other relevant legislation.
Qualifications
  • Qualified solicitor, barrister, or fellow of the Institute of Legal Executives in England (or comparable jurisdiction).
  • Minimum of 2 years' post-qualified experience in the legal profession.
  • Experience in employment law, including contentious and non-contentious matters.
  • Strong knowledge of employment legislation, civil procedure, and tribunal rules.
  • Proven ability to prepare cases, obtain and evaluate evidence, and act as advocate.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, with strong presentation ability.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, supporting training and development of colleagues.
  • Strong IT skills and ability to use case management systems effectively.

This is a desk-based role with hybrid working arrangements. Regular on-site collaboration is expected, alongside flexibility to work remotely with the right technology.
