Overview

Straight-line Civils are currently hiring a control systems engineer in West Bromwich. Location: West Bromwich, West Midlands. Department: EC&I (Electrical, Control & Instrumentation). Reporting To: Electrical and Instrumentation Manager. Salary: £55,000 + Excellent Benefits. Are you an experienced Control Systems Engineer looking to take on a new challenge in a fast-paced industrial environment? We have an exciting opportunity for a Control Systems Engineer to join our EC&I team with an immediate start. This is a key role within the department, where you\'ll be responsible for maintaining and developing control and safety systems across a complex, large-scale manufacturing site.

Responsibilities
  • Maintenance: Diagnose, troubleshoot, and rectify faults in control systems.
  • Projects: Design, specify, and install control and safety systems including PLCs, BPCS, SIS, DCS, SCADA, and HMI platforms.
  • Management of Change (MOC): Review and approve proposals; program and modify control systems accordingly.
  • Liaison: Work collaboratively across all internal departments and with external stakeholders such as system integrators, suppliers, and contractors.
  • Safety & Compliance: Promote a strong safety culture, ensuring all work is compliant with statutory regulations and company procedures.
  • Training: Support the development of team members in control system technologies and best practices.
Skills & Experience
  • Proven experience in configuring and programming Allen Bradley systems (RSLogix 500, Studio 5000, FactoryTalk View).
  • Solid understanding of BS / IEC standards including 61003, 61131, 61508, 61511, 62443.
  • Competence in functional safety design, SIL, LOPA, and SIS.
  • Ability to interpret and work from project documentation such as Cause & Effect diagrams, Control Philosophies, Schematics, URS, FDS, and datasheets.
  • Experience with industrial communication protocols (Ethernet, DH+, Modbus, ProfiNet, Serial, etc.).
  • Knowledge of OT Cyber Security, IIOT, and AI is advantageous.
  • Experience in chemical manufacturing, hazardous areas (ATEX), and intrinsic safety is desirable.
  • Prior exposure to instrumentation engineering would be a plus.
  • Familiarity with AutoCAD or similar drawing software.
Qualifications
  • Minimum HNC in Controls, Electronics, or Instrumentation Engineering.
  • At least 5 years\' post-HNC practical experience in an industrial manufacturing setting.
