SRK Consulting is an independent specialist mining consultancy, focused on adding value to the mining companies, investors, governments, and insurers we support. Our services include engineering, geotechnics, metallurgy, geology, geochemistry, water and environmental, social and governance (ESG) services. We are an independent, international consulting practice that employs 140 staff in our Cardiff office but work closely with our international colleagues located in the Americas, Africa, Asia, and Australia.

About the Role

We currently have an opportunity for a Consultant (Rock Mechanics Engineer) to join an experienced Geotechnical Engineering team based in Cardiff. This opportunity will involve working on a diverse range of exciting projects with multi‑disciplinary teams both in the UK and overseas. International travel and time spent on overseas project sites will be required; the primary role is to act for SRK as a Rock Mechanics Engineer, providing competent consulting services to SRK's clients. Particular importance is attached to ensuring successful delivery of aspects of projects in a well‑timed and cost‑effective manner and in representing SRK professionally to SRK's clients.

Essential Requirements
What the role will include
  • Field work: geotechnical core logging, geological and geotechnical mapping in open pit and underground mines
  • Training of geologists and geotechnical staff, drill supervision, supervision of on‑site geotechnical testing and sampling programmes
  • Working with multi‑disciplinary teams on a range of projects
  • Preparation of laboratory testing schedules and remote supervision of testing programmes
  • Analysis of soil and rock mass information to inform development of geotechnical models
  • Slope stability analysis and design, from bench and berm to overall slope scale
  • Geotechnical aspects of underground mine design and support
  • Geotechnical input to mining scoping studies, pre‑feasibility studies and feasibility studies
  • Technical input to define solutions for specific geotechnical challenges
  • Project reviews for due‑diligence studies and competent persons reports
  • Assisting with report and proposal writing
  • Client liaison
Essential Requirements
  • Commitment to the health and safety of the team
  • Degree or equivalent in geology, geotechnical/civil engineering, or mining engineering, with a post‑graduate qualification in geotechnics/rock mechanics
  • 0 to 5 years of relevant experience; open pit/underground operating mining experience is considered beneficial
  • Excellent English language report writing and communication skills
  • The ability to work independently and remotely within a small team under the leadership of Senior / Principal Consultants
  • Strong work ethic including an ownership attitude and detail‑oriented focus including an aptitude for learning and working with a variety of geological modelling software
  • A valid driver's licence
  • The ability to be based in Cardiff
  • Professional registration, or the eligibility to obtain it
Beneficial (but not strictly required)
  • Prior field experience with geotechnical logging (RMR and Q systems) and collecting/testing samples, mapping and rock mass classification
  • Experience with the Rocscience suite of software and Leapfrog as well as knowledge of programming codes, such as Python
