A prominent NHS Trust is seeking a Consultant Psychiatrist for the North Focussed Support Team. The role involves leading a multidisciplinary team, providing senior medical input, and overseeing patient care in community psychiatry settings. Candidates should have relevant qualifications and experience in mental health care. This is an excellent opportunity for professional development and leadership within the NHS.
The closing date is 17 November 2025.
South London & Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust (SLaM) is looking to recruit a Substantive Consultant Psychiatrist for the North Focussed Support Team. This is an integrated medium to long‑term support service – comprising clinical, social care and voluntary sector staff – that provides multidisciplinary assessment and support. Embedded in local communities and developing strong links to the local Primary Care Networks, the team supports people to recover, stay well, make their own choices and participate in the community.
Along with the co‑consultants and senior colleagues in the North Living Well Centre, the post holder will co‑lead the multi‑disciplinary team which comprises both conventional and new workforce.
The team normally has 11–13 new referrals per month, of which approximately half are eventually accepted and transferred to the team. The team discharges about 5–10 patients per month on average to primary care or another team within or outside the borough. The overall caseload is around 270–280 patients; the post holder shares responsibility for oversight of care with the co‑consultant. There are 2–4 urgent assessments per week with the duty team and a doctor within the service or care coordinator for patients in crisis. The post holder will carry out 7–8 scheduled reviews per week, which are a combination of CPA reviews and medical reviews.
The main clinical duties are to provide senior medical input as consultant psychiatrist / Approved Clinician with the co‑consultant for the patients treated under the North Focussed Support Team, and to be part of the joint senior leadership for the team and North Living Well Centre. There is reciprocal Approved Clinician cover, including under Section 12 of the Mental Health Act for the leave, study leave and sickness of senior medical staff in Lambeth during working hours.
The post holder will provide out‑of‑hour senior medical input as per the Lambeth consultant on‑call rota (1:24) with a category 'B' 1% banding supplement.
As for undergraduate and postgraduate medical education, one full‑time ST is placed in the team; the co‑consultant is currently their Clinical Supervisor. There are year‑3 medical students from King's College London allocated to the team for their longitudinal placements.
The successful candidate will work in Lambeth SLaM, which is part of the Living Well Network Alliance (LWNA), a collaboration with the local place‑based of the South East Integrated Care Board (SEL ICB), local authorities and two voluntary sector partners (Certitude and Thames Reach). The LWNA is the first Alliance in the country to provide whole‑system mental health care for working‑age adults with innovation, co‑production and population needs at the centre of service development and delivery. This is an exciting opportunity to take a leadership role for ongoing community care restructuring and developing integrated neighbourhood models as per the 10‑Year Health Plan.
The post holder will take advantage of all the opportunities of innovative service development, quality improvement and management / leadership development in the LWNA as well as within the Trust. There are ample opportunities for educational and academic roles and collaborations as SLaM is part of King's Health Partners Academic Health Sciences Centre and also the only mental health trust in the UK to have our own biomedical research centre, hosted jointly with the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience at King's College London.
More detailed job description, main responsibilities and person specifications are found in the attached document (pending the RCPsych approval).
There is support for newly appointed consultants in the StartWell group. As part of this the post holder will have the opportunity to have a more senior consultant as a mentor.
This post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order) 1975 and as such it will be necessary for a submission for Disclosure to be made to the Disclosure and Barring Service (formerly known as CRB) to check for any previous criminal convictions.
