An exciting opportunity to join the orthopaedic major trauma service within the major trauma centre at Salford Royal Hospital and trauma work within the Northern Care Alliance.

Salford Royal Hospital is the major trauma centre (MTC) for the Greater Manchester region. Within the NCA, there is a Trauma Unit service at Oldham. Day case trauma is also delivered at Rochdale.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will above all be a productive and cohesive member of the Orthopaedic Trauma Service within the MTC and across the NCA and able to provide ongoing patient care. They will provide expertise in complex orthopaedic trauma such as Rib fixation, Pelvic or Reconstructive surgery.

The successful post holder will have no elective practice: specifically, no practice in Upper limb, hand, hip, knee or foot and ankle surgery.

The successful candidate will be expected to organise their own workload

Continuing responsibility for the care of patients in his/her charge, including all administrative duties associated with patient care.

Contributing to undergraduate, post-graduate and continuing medical and multi professional education activity including teaching as necessary.

Participation in clinical audit and research.

Conducting appropriate duties in cases of emergencies and unforeseen circumstances.

Multidisciplinary teamwork is envisaged as a key component of the working of this Trust and will involve Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT) discussion with other colleagues

Development of special interests that fit in with the Directorate needs and the strategic direction of the Trust.

Undertaking ward rounds as appropriate.

Have an out of hours commitment to trauma patient management as part of an on-call rota

Providing evidence-based care for patients in a multidisciplinary setting.

Person Specification
Qualifications
  • Full GMC Registration and a Licence to Practice
  • FRCS or equivalent
  • ATLS
  • Fellowship training in Complex Trauma (either Pelvic or Reconstructive surgery)
  • DCOTS
  • Higher degree such as: PG Master PG Diploma
Audit, Research, Teaching
  • Evidence of completion of audits
  • Evidence of ability to teach
  • Evidence of commitment to CPD
  • Published in peer reviewed journals
  • Presented at conferences/ meetings
  • Formal teaching qualification
Knowledge, Training and Experience
  • Within 6 months of CCT, or have CCT/equivalent
  • Logbook evidence of Major Trauma Surgery experience
  • Logbook evidence and experience in the management of thoracic trauma
Skills & Abilities
  • Highly motivated
  • Ability to work flexibly to meet departmental targets
  • Up to date knowledge of NHS and future challenges
  • Membership of BOA
  • Attendance at BOA instructional and other specialist trauma courses
