Job description
Overview

An exciting opportunity for a motivated Consultant Psychiatrist to join the Primrose Ward team at Western Community Hospital. This full-time, flexible role became available after the previous post holder transitioned within the division, having served for six years. We welcome applications for hybrid working (face-to-face and remote) and joint applications from part-time consultants.

The successful candidate will collaborate closely with Dr. Joseph Jameson, a full-time consultant in old age psychiatry covering Snowdrop Ward in Winchester. Together they provide a buddy system for cross-cover during annual and study leave. The medical team includes an ST4-6 trainee and three resident trainees (two FY1 doctors and one GP trainee). The ward also benefits from weekly input by a consultant geriatrician who supports physical health management and supervises residents.

Primrose Ward is a fully staffed, functional OPMH unit with a new ward manager, supported by a modern matron and head of nursing. It also includes a Band 7 advanced nurse practitioner, a stable psychology team, and therapy services with physiotherapists and occupational therapists. Based at Oakwood Centre, Western Community Hospital, the post holder will join a strict OPMH on-call rota for North and South Hampshire (approx. 1 in 14 frequency).

Responsibilities

Main duties of the job

The postholder will be responsible for delivering high-quality clinical care, holding Responsible Clinician (RC) duties, and managing treatment for patients on Primrose Ward. They will provide clinical supervision and support for resident doctors, including one ST4-6 senior trainee, two Foundation Year 1 residents, and a GP trainee (CT1-3 level).

Working as a core member of the Old Age Psychiatry (OPMH) inpatient team at Western Community Hospital, the postholder will collaborate closely with the ward's multidisciplinary team. Leadership includes a Modern Matron overseeing Primrose and Snowdrop wards, a dedicated Ward Manager for Primrose, and a Head of Nursing for inpatient services.

The postholder will actively contribute to service development and quality improvement initiatives to enhance inpatient care. They will work alongside a dedicated inpatient psychology team and allied health professionals, including physiotherapists and occupational therapists.

The ward benefits from weekly input by Consultant Geriatrician Dr. Dan Forster, who reviews new admissions and supports residents with managing complex physical health conditions, ensuring robust physical health monitoring.

The postholder will have access to dedicated administrative support for tribunal report writing. Cross-cover arrangements are in place with Dr. Joseph Jameson, who covers Snowdrop Ward during annual and study leave.
