Job responsibilities

The post-holder will be accountable to Dr Alexander Rossor, Lead Clinician for Neurology.

Provide High Quality Care to Patients

The post holder must be medically qualified and maintain GMC specialist registration and hold a licence to practice. Develop and maintain the competencies required to carry out the duties of the post. Ensure prompt attendance at agreed direct clinical care programmed activities. Involve patients in decisions about their care and respond to their views.

Research, Teaching and Training

Where possible, collaborate with academic and clinical colleagues to enhance the Trust's translational research portfolio, while meeting the full requirements of Research Governance. Provide high-quality teaching to medical undergraduates and other health care professionals as required by the Clinical Director. Act as educational supervisor and appraiser as delegated to ensure external accreditation of training posts.

Performance Management

Work with medical, nursing and managerial colleagues to ensure high performance in: clinical efficiency (LOS reductions, fewer cancelled operations, fewer DNAs), quality of outcomes (infection control targets, reduced readmission rates), financial management (cost improvement programmes, managing locum spend, budget targets, accurate clinical data), and operational efficiency (day-case rates, waiting lists, demand management).

Medical Staff Management

Ensure junior doctors' hours comply with EWTD and New Deal; manage leave and on-call cover; participate in recruitment; participate in team objective setting and annual appraisal for all doctors in training, Trust doctors, Clinical Fellows and non-consultant grades as delegated.

Governance

Review clinical outcomes using external benchmarking, participate in clinical audits, incident reporting and action implementation. Work with Directorate, Patient and Public Involvement panels on clinical and service developments. Ensure NICE requirements are reviewed and implemented. Ensure guidelines and protocols are adhered to and updated. Stay informed about best practice and discuss implications with the Clinical Director. Role-model infection control and undertake regular CPD, appraisal and revalidation.

Strategy and Business Planning

participate in business planning and objective setting; represent the Trust at clinical networks and external meetings as delegated by the Clinical Director.

Leadership and Team Working

Demonstrate leadership, collaborate with the multi-disciplinary team and Kings Health Partners, resolve conflicts, and adhere to leave guidelines.

Job Plan

Your job plan is anticipated to contain 7 programmed activities per week on average, to be carried out on Guy's & St Thomas' sites. You will discuss and agree a detailed job plan with your Clinical Director within 3 months of your start date. The plan will be reviewed annually.

Initial programmed activities include direct clinical care (outpatient clinics, administration, neuroradiology MDM, ward referrals/rounds, referrals triage) and supporting activities (job planning, appraisal, revalidation, clinical governance, mandatory training). The total programmed activities are 7 per week.

Qualifications and Experience

Professional Qualifications

Essential: Eligible for full UK GMC registration and a Licence to Practise; on GMC Specialist Register or within six months of attaining CCT; MRCP (UK) or equivalent; on Neurology Register. Desirable: MD, PhD.

Clinical Experience

Essential: Specific clinical procedures relevant to post including clinical risk; experience of working in Clinical Neurology; expertise in neurogenetics.

Clinical Skills: Essential – define appropriate level of clinical knowledge for the post.

Audit Management & IT

Essential – defined track record of clinical governance, audit, management and IT skills; understanding of audit principles. Desirable – experience in running neurological audits for long-term conditions.

Research, Teaching skill & Experience

Essential – track record of research, publications and/or obtaining independent research funding; experience of undertaking clinical trials. Desirable – higher qualification in neurological research or allied field.

Leadership / Management Skills

Essential – clear communication, accountability, interpersonal skills, adaptability, teamwork, staff management, and financial budgeting knowledge.
