Qualifications

  • FRCA (or equivalent) required.
  • Broad clinical experience in anaesthesia essential.

Job Summary

We are seeking a Consultant Anaesthetist with a specialist interest in neuroanaesthesia to join our large, forward‐thinking department at University Hospitals Plymouth.

Main Duties

We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Consultant Anaesthetist to deliver high‑quality anaesthesia services across a broad range of specialties, including general surgery, major trauma, obstetrics, neurosurgery, and more, with a commitment to putting people at the heart of our service.

Clinical duties will be complemented by active involvement in teaching and training. You will partner with the University of Plymouth, engaging in undergraduate and postgraduate education, mentoring junior doctors, delivering lectures, and supporting clinical learning while continuing your own professional development.

Job plans will be tailored to meet service needs and your professional interests, fostering a collaborative and forward‑thinking environment.

Job Responsibilities

Our flexible job plans typically include 1.5 PAs of generic Supporting Professional Activities (SPA) time, adaptable for roles in education, management, research, or quality improvement.

You will run a first‑on call rota for anaesthesia (excluding cardiac, ICU, and paediatrics), supported by a second‑on call consultant, with required proximity to the hospital. Resident trainees are available overnight in obstetrics, the emergency theatre, ICU and cardiac ICU.

We support sustainability and work‑life balance with a clear process for stepping off the on‑call rota at later career stages.

Person Specification

Essential

  • CCT in anaesthesia (or expected within 6 months)
  • FRCA (or equivalent)
  • Broad, current clinical experience of adult anaesthesia
  • SIA/fellowship/extensive experience in neuroanaesthesia

Desirable

  • SIA/fellowship in major general anaesthesia
  • SIA/fellowship in airway
  • Evidence of positive patient and colleague feedback
Assessment and Interview

Essential: Well‑rounded colleague with safe clinical experience

Performance: Performance at interview

Desirable: Excel at interview
