The role
Submarines have some of the most rigorous safety and regulatory standards in the world - and it’s the purpose of our Commissioning Engineers to ensure that the systems used on them are installed and working correctly.
You’ll do this through the inspection, testing, set-to-work and integration of systems and equipment - carrying out diagnosis and proposing corrective solutions to faults. It also involves:
You’ll use both academic knowledge and practical skills - whether that’s in electrical, mechanical, or naval architectural/constructive fields - which you’ll apply to complex systems in a challenging environment. And because we support the Navy 24/7 our engineers sometimes work in shifts to get the job done.

This role is full time, 35 hours per week and is based on site at Devonport Royal Dockyard.
What you need to be a Commissioning Engineer
A background in submarine engineering isn’t essential - we are looking for individuals with transferable skills from a wide range of engineering/technical backgrounds including Electrical, Mechanical, Constructive and Naval Architecture. You’ll need to have completed at least a Level 3 or 4 engineering apprenticeship or hold a degree in a relevant engineering discipline.
You’ll also need to have experience of technical system drawings and associated documentation, have good planning and time management skills, and have the ability to work to a consistently high standard in a dynamic environment.
Security Clearance
The successful candidate must be a sole UK national who is able to achieve and maintain Naval Nuclear Propulsion Information (NNPPI) security clearance for this role.
