Job description

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and dynamic nurse to join the colorectal service as a clinical nurse specialist in stoma care.

The stoma nurses in Hywel Dda care for patients before and after emergency/elective colorectal surgery. This is a diverse role involving a significant amount of clinical care, which is delivered within acute/community hospitals, nurse led clinics, patient's homes and nursing/residential homes. Advice is also provided by telephone to patient, carers and GPs. We have a commitment to working within the multidisciplinary setting.

The successful applicant must show a significant interest in the speciality, and/or wound care, possess good communication and interpersonal skills and enjoy teaching, which is a major focus of this role. The successful applicant would have a period of mentorship by the experienced specialist nurse teams and will be required to undertake level 6/7 education relevant to the speciality. Previous experience in surgery or gastro-enterology specialities will be an advantage.

There is a substantive band 6 post at 37.5 hours per week. The base location would be at Glangwili General Hospital but with an expectation to travel to the other hospital sites and within the community in a timely manner to meet expectations of the service delivery.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will work as part of a team in providing specialist advice and nursing care for patients in the acute/community setting and nurse led clinics.

Provide support for patients undergoing stoma surgery for both benign and malignant disease and to assist in the adjustment to altered body image and function. Promote patient independence in stoma care, optimising potential for recovery and rehabilitation to as near normal lifestyle as possible.

Acts as a resource for health care professionals, participating in teaching of patients and staff in clinical areas, aiming to improve and maintain quality standards of care for all stoma patients.

The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; English and/or Welsh speakers are equally welcome to apply.
