Job description

We are a small, and friendly team currently we have a 50-50 mix of deaf / hard of hearing and hearing staff based in Springfield University Hospital. We are part of the National Deaf CAMHS service and have strong links with our colleagues in the North, Southwest and Midlands regions of England and often come together for training, service development, research, and audit purposes.

Key Responsibilities
  • Work autonomously and collaboratively with deaf and hearing colleagues, supporting a therapeutic service to deaf children and young people, and their families/carers, across Greater London, Home Counties and at Springfield University Hospital.
  • Provide clinical appointments, attend meetings at Springfield Hospital, community sessions in Greater London and the Home Counties, and online appointments and meetings.
  • As a trainee Child Wellbeing Practitioner, enrol in a graduate or postgraduate diploma training course at the University of Sussex, attend university teaching, and progress through assessments to obtain an academic and professional qualification.
  • Work as a trainee under supervision, delivering brief evidence‑based interventions and guided self‑help for children and young people with mild to moderate mental health difficulties.
  • Receive high‑quality supervision and support throughout.
  • Perform structured psychological assessments, including self‑report measures, rating scales, and observations, to formulate and deliver care plans.
  • Participate in multi‑disciplinary meetings, contributing to early intervention for children and young people.
  • Under suitable clinical supervision, undertake teaching, training and supervision duties to develop professional competencies.
  • Work across multiple sites – mainstream and specialist schools, community sites, and virtual meetings – with BSL/English interpreters, deaf or spoken interpreters.
  • Maintain consistent work plans agreed with a Clinical Psychologist and adhere to Trust policies and the Sussex University CWP programme framework.
  • Maintain innovative, flexible and adaptable working approaches, follow Trust lone working protocols, complete mandatory training, and travel as required (vehicle with valid licence and insurance desirable).
  • Commit to using data and relevant measures to assess clinical outcomes and continually improve practice.
  • Embark on the training programme starting week commencing 5th January 2026.

This is a unique opportunity for a trainee Child Wellbeing Practitioner to work within the National Deaf Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (ND CAMHS) London team. The post holder will working with deaf children with emotional/behavioural problems, their parents, schools, and community agencies. This role suits a deaf or hearing, BSL‑using and non‑BSL‑using clinician. The post is salaried and fully funded for a one‑year qualification in Children’s Mental Health and Wellbeing through Sussex University and NHS England.
