Job Title: Carriage Works Supervisor

Location: The Watercress Line – Ropley Station (On site working required)

Salary: Competitive

Job Type: Permanent full‑time (5 days over 7, core 5–0 with flexibility, weekend, evening and holiday work required)

Holidays: Days including bank holiday allowance

The Watercress Line is a heritage steam railway operated by award‑winning volunteers and supported by paid staff, bringing smiles to faces through the beautiful Hampshire countryside for years.

Responsibilities
  • Manage a team of 3–4 staff, including apprentices and volunteers
  • Conduct regular inspections of the carriage fleet
  • Control operational costs and manage resources while maintaining productivity standards
  • Carry out repairs and overhaul/testing of vacuum brake systems
  • Maintain and repair plumbing and electrical systems
  • Repair coach interiors, doors and locks
Qualifications
  • Essential: Railway engineering workshop environment experience; experience working or volunteering on Mk1 coaches; complementary transferable engineering skills; hand skills; reading and understanding an engineering instruction manual; experience supervising staff and organising and delegating tasks; ability to train people to task.
  • Desirable: Experience in shunting railway yards; experience working with volunteers; driving licence; metal fabrication; understanding of basic electrics; ability to work in Imperial.

Candidates with the experience or relevant job titles of Construction Supervisor, Construction Manager, Construction Superintendent, Project Superintendent, Construction Specialist, Project Engineer, Project Manager may also be considered for this role.
