Job description

Devon Partnership NHS Trust have an exciting opportunity for a skilled and motivated Carpenter / Building Operative to join our Estates team at Langdon Hospital in Dawlish. You will be part of a dynamic team responsible for the maintenance of building, mechanical and electrical services across a range of healthcare premises. This includes working in both new and existing buildings within the Trust and its client organisations.

This role requires a high level of flexibility, confidence and the ability to work on your own initiative with minimal supervision. For the majority of the working day you will operate independently, managing your own workload and ensuring tasks are completed efficiently and to a high standard. You will also be required to work collaboratively with other trades on occasion to support wider estates activities.

Given the geographical area covered by the Estates team, a full UK driving licence is essential.

Main duties of the job

Key responsibilities for the role include:

  • Plan, organise and prioritise your own workflow within parameters agreed with the Maintenance Supervisor.
  • Problem-solve and diagnose faults, determining appropriate solutions and carrying out installation, repair and maintenance of physical assets.
  • Maintain and repair Trust property, buildings, fixtures, fittings and associated equipment.
  • Work under your own initiative for the majority of the working day, ensuring tasks are carried out safely and effectively.
  • Demonstrate competency in all aspects of carpentry, working independently or as part of a multi-disciplinary team as required.
  • Plan and prioritise workload in conjunction with the Maintenance Supervisor to support service needs.
  • Ensure compliance with safe systems of work and relevant Health & Safety Regulations at all times.
  • Establish and maintain good working relationships, contributing to effective team working and supporting colleagues to ensure a high-quality estates service is provided across Devon Partnership NHS Trust and its client Trusts.
  • Undertake surveys or audits relevant to your work, including the routine testing of equipment. Participate in wider surveys and audits, and support the acceptance and testing of new equipment where required.

To work as a carpenter as part of a team in the maintenance of building, mechanical and electrical services in healthcare properties. This will involve working in a wide range of healthcare and associated premises in both new and existing buildings. You will work flexibly, using your own initiative and with the minimum of supervision. For the majority of your day you will be working on your own although there will be a requirement to work with Installs, maintains, services and repairs a range of equipment used within their trade

Maintains equipment, fabric, utility services of trust properties as per their trade other trades from time to time. A full driving licence is an essential requirement due to the geographical area covered.

The Estates Department is a multi-disciplinary department employing approximately 26 staff including a team of directly employed maintenance staff of various disciplines.

Knowledge & Skills
  • Thorough trade knowledge, skills and understanding to carry out a comprehensive range of practical duties
  • Good verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to work alone or as part of a team and with the minimum of supervision
  • Tact and diplomacy as required
  • Ability to prioritise and work to conflicting demands.

  • Occasional/ frequent moderate physical effort for several long periods/ occasional requirement to exert intense physical effort for short periods

Experience
  • Practical, theoretical and relevant statutory experience relevant to carpentry work.
  • Experience of working within healthcare properties.
  • Experience in an Estates related environment.
Qualifications
  • Knowledge of a full range of trade procedures acquired through relevant trade apprenticeship such as City & Guilds NVQ Level 3 or equivalent qualification in carpentry plus relevant or equivalent experience
  • Woking in confined space / Working at heights / Asbestos awareness
