Job description
Overview

The Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust requires a clinically excellent Cardiac Physiologist to join one of the largest NHS teaching trusts in the country. The Trust comprises four hospitals – the John Radcliffe Hospital, Churchill Hospital, Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre and Horton General Hospital – and the Cardiac Physiology department works across all four sites and community hubs in the county.

Responsibilities
  • To undertake a range of diagnostic cardiac investigations at highly specialist cardiac physiologist level and provide expert, clinically accurate reports, adhering to local and national guidelines.
  • Provide expert knowledge and skills in a range of cardiac investigations, communicating results across a multidisciplinary team.
  • Provide training to all relevant members of the MDT in the delivery of routine and complex cardiac investigations.
  • Work closely with the consultant cardiologists, clinical cardiac physiology leads, advanced nurse practitioners and other medical colleagues in providing clinical leadership and input into service development.
  • Facilitate the efficient and effective management of resources within cardiac physiology.
  • Contribute to the strategic development and daily operational management of the Department.
  • Initiate and undertake audit within the specialist area and work collaboratively with research departments.
  • Act as a clinical role model and resource to staff, demonstrating a commitment to evidence‑based best practice care and clinical excellence, to optimise quality of care.
  • Ensure that the standards of the service delivered meet national clinical standards and comply with the strategic aims of the Trust.
  • Support the Head of Cardiac Physiology in all operational/managerial matters as required, for example effective use of resources and management of cardiac physiology personnel.
  • In collaboration with the Band 7 group create, support and develop a dynamic cardiac physiology team with a unified vision for future planning and development of the department.
  • Implement and support quality initiatives within Cardiac Medicine, utilising effective use and monitoring of standards, auditing and evaluation of the echocardiography service to meet patient needs.
  • Work with the Band 7 group to ensure procedures are in place to facilitate the achievement of Trust targets for cardiac medicine such as diagnostic test waiting times and implementation of clinical governance frameworks.
  • In collaboration with the Head of Cardiac Physiology lead the development and evaluation of relevant protocols, guidelines and procedures based on current evidence/research and facilitate/support other staff to do the same.
  • Monitor activity within the clinical area whilst ensuring that staffing levels and skill mix meet clinical requirements.
  • Promote awareness and understanding in others of efficient resource utilisation through education and example.
  • Ensure that all new staff has an appropriate induction, orientation and assigned mentor.
  • Improve and develop Cardiac Physiologist roles.
Qualifications and Experience
  • Motivated Band 7 Cardiac Physiologist experience; demonstrated post‑graduate level of working through a continuous development portfolio.
  • Evidence of leadership, mentorship and specialist working within an area of Cardiac Physiology is advantageous.
  • Professional registration preferred, e.g., RCCP or AHCS.
  • Experience with professional bodies such as BSE, BHRS and BCIS; participation in council level representation.
  • Experience in a practical assessment centre for BSE and participation in STP OSFA assessments for the National School of Healthcare Science.
