Job description

Our prestigious client situated in North Berwick is currently seeking a Cafe Manager. This role involves managing the day-to-day operations of the Cafe and team. This is a temporary role for a duration of 2-3 months (this could be extended for the right person and have the possibility of becoming permanent).

Your Time at Work
Main Duties and Responsibilities
Operations Management
  • Oversee day-to-day café operations, ensuring excellent customer service and a high-quality food and beverage offering.
  • Manage stock control, ordering, and supplier relationships to minimise waste and maintain appropriate levels.
  • Monitor health, safety, and hygiene standards, ensuring full compliance with food safety regulations.
  • To ensure all areas of the premises are always kept clean and tidy.
  • Handle cash management, till reconciliation, and banking procedures.
  • Fill in for Cafe and Bookshop staff to cover holidays.
  • Manage the donations, sorting and collections of books, in the absence of the bookshop manager.
  • To minimise controllable costs and shrinkage at all times.
  • Stock management on Cybertill.
  • Liaising with other departments such as Fundraising, Finance and Facilities.
  • Liaising with Community Groups for use of the premises for events outside normal opening hours.
Staff Management
  • Recruit, train, supervise, and support café & bookshop staff and volunteers, fostering a positive and motivated team culture.
  • Organise staff and volunteer rotas and manage holiday requests to ensure appropriate cover at all times, including covering for absences when other staff/volunteers not available.
  • Conduct regular team meetings and performance reviews, providing feedback and development opportunities.
  • Lead by example, promoting excellent service standards and teamwork.
  • General administration using Better Impact Volunteer management system Microsoft word, Excel and Outlook.
Customer Service & Business Growth
  • Ensure all customers receive a warm, friendly, and efficient service.
  • Handle customer enquiries, feedback, and complaints professionally.
  • Support the management team to develop promotions, marketing initiatives, and events to increase revenue.
  • Monitor sales performance and identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Working with the fundraising team to develop income generation opportunities.
  • Working alongside Café Chef and the Area Café & Trading Manager to maximise profits while remaining competitive.

  • Previous experience in café, restaurant, or hospitality management.
  • Strong leadership and staff management skills.

  • Knowledge of health, safety, and food hygiene regulations.
  • Ability to work under pressure, multitask, and problem-solve effectively.
Desirable
  • Barista and/or food preparation experience.
  • Basic financial management and budgeting skills.
  • Familiarity with point-of-sale (POS) systems.

This role requires flexibility to work Saturdays and public holidays as part of the regular shift pattern.
