Job summary

A leading cultural institution in Northern Ireland is seeking an Estates and Buildings Maintenance Assistant to ensure efficient maintenance of its grounds and buildings. The role includes various maintenance tasks and requires good customer service skills. Candidates should be flexible in their availability to work weekends and public holidays. This is a temporary position offering up to 25 hours per week with competitive hourly pay based on age and experience.

THE EMPLOYER IS: NATIONAL MUSEUMS NINational Museums NI is a leading cultural institution and is responsible for ensuring that its significant collection is developed, cared for and accessible to the widest possible audience.We care for, develop and provide access to the National Collection of 1.4 million objects which are multidisciplinary, diverse and span all time periods, referencing Northern Ireland within and to the wider world.The Estates and Buildings Maintenance Assistant will form part of a dedicated Estates & Buildings Maintenance Team, responsible for ensuring the efficient maintenance, upkeep and presentation of the grounds and buildings at the Museum.

Responsibilities
  • To provide a general maintenance service including sweeping roads, lifting and collecting litter, emptying bins, collecting debris ash, sweeping and lifting leaves and general rubbish.
  • To undertake grass cutting including working with self-propelled mowers, rotary and cylinder, hedge trimmers, strimmers and tractor mounted leaf vac and rotary mower.
  • To carry out additional maintenance including weeding and clearing areas of scrub and bush to allow further development or easier maintenance.
  • To assist in the minor maintenance of roads and walkways including removal of leaves, clearing of snow and salting.
  • To assist other departments with logistical tasks, including moving furniture around the Museum, delivering or collecting items, delivering logs, turf and coal, moving exhibits, assisting at events and other general labouring duties as required.
  • To carry out activities including crop cultivation and animal management in support of the museum farm.
  • To undertake the set-up and breakdown of spaces for events and other functions as required.
  • To be committed to good health and safety and access practice and ensure familiarity with National Museums NI’s health and safety policies, procedures and guidelines.
  • To be courteous and polite at all times when in contact with the visiting public.
  • To carry out weekend and public holiday working as part of a rota and as required for events and other operational requirements.
  • To undertake appropriate training and personal development programmes to enhance personal effectiveness.
  • Ensure the delivery of National Museums NI’s Vision, Mission and Values.
  • To carry out other duties as required by the Museum, consistent with the grade and responsibilities of the post.
Skills and Qualifications
  • Have the ability to provide customer service to a wide and diverse range of people.
  • Experience of working within a team and as an individual within a team.
  • Availability to work flexible hours within a rota system including weekends, evenings and bank holidays.
  • Previous experience in grounds maintenance, general labouring or buildings maintenance.
  • A general knowledge of Health and Safety procedures and issues.
