Built Heritage – Building Surveyor

Location

London, Northwest & Southeast (primarily London and the Southeast, with some national travel)

Working Pattern

Full-time : 08 : 00 – 17 : 30, Monday to Friday

Additional hours by prior agreement

Weekend or public holiday working (if required) will be compensated with time off in lieu

Hybrid or home working by agreement

Qualifications
  • Degree in a construction-related subject
  • Postgraduate qualification in Built Heritage or a closely related discipline
Knowledge & Technical Expertise
  • Strong knowledge of building conservation and building pathology
  • Understanding of traditional forms of construction, maintenance, and repair
  • Practical knowledge of lime-based materials, traditional building materials, and their applications
Purpose of the Role

To support the delivery of consultancy and building surveying services within the built heritage sector, contributing to the procurement, management, and successful delivery of projects across a range of historic and traditional buildings.

Reporting Line

Reports to : Business Development & Technical Director

Acts as Deputy to : Business Development & Technical Director

Key Responsibilities & Deliverables
  • Lead the Building Surveying service offering with senior management support
  • Procure and deliver consultancy services to a diverse client base
  • Prepare and issue offers of service for consultancy commissions
  • Obtain, review, and manage specialist subcontractor quotations
  • Undertake buildings and structures research
  • Carry out condition surveys, schedules of condition, and schedules of repair
  • Deliver building investigations and defect reports (building pathology)
  • Prepare long-term maintenance plans
  • Manage materials analysis, testing, and reporting
  • Provide general building consultancy services
  • Undertake on‑site survey work on live projects and produce associated reports
  • Meet agreed fee and billing targets
  • Deliver consultancy work within agreed cost allowances and programmes
  • Ensure work is completed in accordance with Quality Assurance procedures
  • Prepare and comply with health, safety, and environmental risk assessments and method statements
Key Role Requirements
  • Act as first point of contact for clients and liaise with other consultants and professional teams
  • Independently manage workload with line manager support
  • Identify and elevate health and safety risks in line with statutory requirements
  • Maintain a high level of accuracy in investigations and report writing
  • Ensure timely production of high-quality deliverables
  • Accurately record time, billing, and site contributions
  • Support administrative and financial tasks including quoting, client liaison, timesheets, and debt chasing
  • Communicate effectively with internal teams and senior stakeholders
  • Manage multiple projects concurrently while meeting deadlines
  • Write, compile, and coordinate all consultancy documentation and deliverables
  • Build and maintain strong working relationships with clients and specialist sub‑consultants
  • Support business development activities by identifying and discussing prospective opportunities

Ongoing commitment to Continuous Professional Development (CPD) is required

Training in Microsoft Office packages and exposure to construction-related software (e.g. Adobe, Revit, SketchUp, CAD)

Professional Memberships
  • Encouraged membership of heritage bodies such as Historic England, ICOMOS, and SPAB
  • Professional subscription fees supported subject to commitment to training and development
