East & South East London NHS Pathology Partnership

Cellular Pathology

Registered Band 6 Biomedical Scientist RLH | 37.5 Hrs per Week

The East & South East London NHS Pathology Partnership (Pathology Partnership) is a Pathology network formed across three NHS Trusts: Barts Health, Homerton University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust. The successful individual will be based in the Pathology and Pharmacy Building at the Royal London Hospital site.

Barts Health is one of the largest Trusts in the UK, with a turnover in excess of £1.25 billion and a workforce of over 15,000 staff. We offer a wide range of diagnostic specialities due to an acute teaching hospital environment and diversity of the local population. The Cellular Pathology Division provides diagnostic and screening services for the whole of North East London and has a combined workload of over 75,000 histology and 5,000 non-gynae cytology specimens. Our facilities are close to underground and DLR services. The laboratory has UKAS accreditation and is HCPC accredited.

Main duties of the job

We are looking for a competent and versatile individual with substantive experience in Cellular Pathology to provide technical support to the histology service. To be suitable for this role you must have a degree in Biomedical Science and be registered with the HCPC. A completed and assessed IBMS specialist portfolio is preferred, but there may be an opportunity for the right individual to complete a portfolio under the Agenda for Change, Annex 21 provision. Applications are welcomed from candidates with suitable experience with the appropriate qualification.

About Us

Between 2021 and 2024 the Partnership undertook a complex transformation programme to establish a single network of laboratories, underpinned by a single Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) and single Quality Management System (QMS).

The Partnership has a main hub laboratory at the Royal London Hospital and essential service laboratories (ESL) at the six other hospital sites served by the Partnership. The Partnership has three operational divisions:

  • Blood Sciences including Haematology, Blood Transfusion and Biochemistry
  • Microbiology and Virology
  • Cellular Pathology and Cancer Diagnostics

The 2024/25 total operating costs across the Partnership were approximately £121 million per annum with a workforce establishment of around 860 WTE.

We strive to live by our WeCare values and are committed to promoting inclusion, where every staff member has a sense of belonging. We value our differences and fully advocate, cultivate and support an inclusive working environment. We particularly welcome applications from Black, Asian and minority ethnic candidates as they are underrepresented within the Pathology Partnership and Barts Health at this band.
