Overview

The Biomedical Scientist is responsible for performing a wide range of complex medical laboratory tests and analyses on patient samples to aid in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of diseases. This role involves conducting laboratory procedures, analysing results, maintaining laboratory equipment, and ensuring quality control standards are met.

Responsibilities
  • Laboratory Testing and Analysis: Perform routine and complex laboratory tests including chemistry, haematology, microbiology and immunology procedures, according to established protocols.
  • Interpret test results and provide accurate and timely reports to healthcare providers.
  • Ensure all tests are conducted following standard operating procedures (SOPs) and national guidelines.
  • Specimen Handling and Processing: Responsible for proper primary sample collection, acceptance, and rejection.
  • Receive, label, and process specimens according to laboratory protocols.
  • Maintain accurate records of specimens and test results.
  • Ensure proper storage and disposal of specimens in compliance with safety standards.
  • Quality Assurance and Control: Participate in external quality assurance programs.
  • Conduct and document daily quality control checks on laboratory equipment and procedures.
  • Identify and troubleshoot issues with laboratory tests and equipment.
  • Equipment Maintenance: Operate, calibrate, and maintain laboratory instruments and equipment.
  • Ensure all equipment is in optimal working condition and meets quality standards.
  • Report any malfunctions or issues to the Laboratory Manager and arrange for repairs as needed.
  • Identify and troubleshoot technical and analytical problems, taking appropriate corrective actions.
  • Maintaining inventory control system for reagents and consumables. Monthly Stock and Kit in use checking.
  • Reception, acceptance and storage of reagents and consumables.
  • Filing of Instruction for use of reagent and consumable so that they are readily available.
  • Back up of all data from equipment.
  • Compliance and Safety: Adhere to all laboratory safety protocols and procedures, including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and infection control procedures.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements, including ISO 15189 standards.
  • Participate in regular audits and inspections, and implement corrective actions as needed.
  • Documentation and Reporting: Maintain accurate and detailed records of all laboratory tests and quality control activities.
  • Ensure all documentation is up-to-date and follows version control protocols.
  • Report test results to clinicians and other healthcare professionals in a clear and timely manner.
  • Report critical results promptly and follow established protocols for result reporting.
  • Continuous Improvement and Training: Stay updated with the latest advancements in biomedical science and laboratory practices.
  • Participate in ongoing training and professional development opportunities.
  • Contribute to the development and review of laboratory SOPs and policies.
  • Team Collaboration: Work collaboratively with other laboratory staff to ensure efficient and effective laboratory operations.
  • Provide guidance and support to junior staff and trainees.
  • Participate in team meetings and contribute to the continuous improvement of laboratory services.
  • Collaborate with laboratory colleagues to resolve issues and maintain workflow.
Education and Experience
  • Bachelor\'s degree in biomedical science or a related field (Master\'s preferred).
  • State registration as a Biomedical Scientist with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in a clinical laboratory setting.
