Job description

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a highly dedicated Bank 6 Clinical Lead Nurse to join Swanswell Ward, one of our inpatient mental health teams based at The Caludon Centre, Coventry. The post holder will be part of the Nursing team and work duty shifts including weekends and nights, ensuring a high level of quality care is maintained. The role supports the Ward Manager in all aspects of delivering safe care to patients, with an emphasis on ensuring quality and safety is maintained within the ward at all times. The post holder will work within a multi‑disciplinary age‑independent, MH inpatient service, ensure all organisational systems and processes are adhered to, manage conflicting priorities and change in complex situations, act as a resource of clinical knowledge and competence, support audit, guidelines and quality improvement approaches, undertake trusted assessments, provide evidence‑based interventions and clinical leadership.

Responsibilities
  • Formulate and coordinate holistic assessment of mental and physical needs.
  • Act as Nurse in Charge (NIC) and manage shifts.
  • Supervise and develop junior staff members, ensuring competency sign‑off for junior staff, students and trainees.
  • Ensure a robust process for care plan formulation, review, evaluation of treatment and safety plans, and report back to the multi‑professional team.
  • Contribute to the maintenance and development of the social and physical therapeutic environment.
  • Lead all areas of risk management within the ward, ensuring risk—including patient risk, positive risk taking and environmental risk assessment—is embedded and trust processes are adhered to and recorded.
  • Maintain high standards of clinical care and deliver service based on evidence, clinical and professional judgement.
  • Identify needs to facilitate safe discharge.
  • Lead and coordinate the adherence to and reporting of safety & quality issues and report any concerns immediately.
  • Have a detailed working knowledge of key partnership services and organisations (e.g., voluntary sector, social services, housing), including eligibility criteria and access procedures.
  • Lead and maintain a learning environment via mentorship, supervision and guidance for junior staff and students.
  • Lead on Quality Improvement and liaise with the Quality Improvement team to support practice development and coordinate staff training in improvement approaches.
  • Support staff training and development in all areas appropriate to inpatient care.
  • Lead on improving patient experience and co‑production on the ward.
  • Provide senior leadership across the acute system as deemed necessary.
