Band 8a - Nurse Endoscopist, Endoscopy

This position is full time 37.5 hrs per week offering flexible working Monday - Friday 8:00am to 6:00pm and offered at a band 8a for a fully JAG accredited Nurse Endoscopist independent in colonoscopy. JAG accreditation in gastroscopy is desirable but not essential. The successful candidate will be expected to carry out diagnostic and surveillance endoscopic procedures as well as cover nurse-led clinics.

We are looking for an established Nurse Endoscopist who is forward thinking, motivated and committed to join our expanding team within our JAG accredited Endoscopy service.

This post will also be considered as a developmental post starting at a band 7 with progression up to band 8a once the necessary knowledge, skills and accreditation have been obtained. This person would ideally have a background in Endoscopy, Gastroenterology or Colorectal nursing.

The Endoscopy service in West Herts comprises six state of the art Endoscopy rooms across two sites which include Watford General Hospital and Hemel Hempstead Hospital. Both units are fully JAG accredited. We have a well-established team of Nurse Endoscopists who work closely with the Gastroenterology Consultants and wider MDT to deliver a range of services.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be expected to carry out diagnostic, therapeutic and surveillance endoscopic procedures as well as cover nurse-led clinics.

Using advanced clinical skills, you will be assessing, diagnosing, treating and prescribing care plans for our patients.

Job responsibilities

Working within Hospital and Departmental guidance, policy and protocols undertake endoscopy procedures and be aware of the associated responsibilities and accountabilities.

Perform advanced and specialised clinical skills in assessment, diagnosis and treatment of endoscopy patients.

Administer conscious sedation/local anaesthesia within agreed protocols to patients requiring Endoscopy in line with the Nurse Prescribers course.

Interpret screening and diagnostic laboratory tests and evaluate results and revise the plan of care where appropriate and consult/refer when needed.

Support the Endoscopy Management Team in developing the service considering service improvements to support the patient pathway and the Trust directives for endoscopy services.

Person Specification
Education
  • Registered nurse with current registration
  • Educated to degree level in related health care subject or equivalent or working towards
  • JAG approved endoscopist or demonstrable key performance indicators
  • JAG train the trainer certificate
  • Evidence of Masters level study or continuation of personal development towards Masters level or equivalent
  • Independent non-medical prescriber
  • Mentorship module or equivalent
Knowledge
  • Evidence of the acquisition of relevant skills associated with the role that meet with the JAG guideline requirements
  • Expert knowledge and awareness in area of practice
  • Knowledge of the NHS constitutional standards for cancer and routine pathways
  • Knowledge and experience to work as an autonomous clinical practitioner, with self-management of own caseload of patients.
  • Essential IT skills (EITS)
  • Previous knowledge from working in the NHS or similar organisation as a nurse endoscopist
  • Expert knowledge and awareness of both upper and lower GI cancers and treatment
Experience
  • Experience as a Band 6/7 in clinical setting/specialist role
  • Expert in a range of diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy techniques
  • Experience of managing own caseload of patients
  • Independent Nurse Endoscopist for either lower and/or upper GI procedures
  • Recognised management course or equivalent level of skill gained through experience
