Job description
Role Overview

This role operates across multiple sites, and provides concise, timely and impartial advice, guidance and support to managers and staff to ensure the effectiveness of the Trusts’ arrangements for promoting safe environments and work activities.

As the Trusts’ competent person in health and safety, the post holder will act as an expert resource in providing the knowledge and skills to assist in the generation of a positive health and safety culture throughout the Trust, continuously working towards the implementation of external requirements under HSE and Care Quality Commission outcomes.

37.5 hrs per week, with flexible working options available for discussion.

Key Responsibilities
  • Providing competent and impartial H&S advice to managers and staff of all levels.
  • Working closely with the Estates Team, Capital Projects, the Management Group and Senior Managers, leading on key H&S issues to influence and deliver short-, medium- and long‑term implementation plans specifically for health and safety management.
  • Assisting the Fire, Health & Safety Manager in representing the Trust at health and safety meetings and attending regular strategic meetings and training updates to maintain compliance with all statutory and legal requirements.
  • Analysing data, situations or problems with ambiguities and uncertainties to produce ways forward that maximise benefit to the Trust and the population it serves, including the production of strategic objectives and business plans, and providing professional and technical advice where expert opinion differs.
  • Emergency response to H&S incidents.
  • Liaising with staff and management to identify and assess H&S risks.
  • Owning H&S policies, procedures, training, audits and ensuring inspections are aligned with current strategy, policies, and procedures.
  • Utilising data to provide assurance that all departments/areas are compliant, analysing results, prioritising remedial actions and preparing action plans to mitigate risk.
  • Developing plans to address identified health and safety training requirements for staff and contractors.
  • Reporting to the Trust leadership as required.
  • Assisting with developing long‑term strategic plans for H&S in line with the Trust’s corporate objectives.
  • Understanding the control of legionella and the management of asbestos within the Trust, working closely with the Estate Manager.
  • Ensuring all RIDDOR events are acted upon in line with HSE protocol and Trust policies in a timely manner.
