Job description

UK residents only, as sponsorship is not offered for this post.

We are recruiting student midwives to become registered midwives with the Nursing and Midwifery Council. The course is funded by NHS England, paying your tuition fees and offering salary support at Mid Band 5 with no enhancements. You will learn to provide midwifery care in a variety of settings under the direct supervision of a midwife practice supervisor and attend the University of Hertfordshire for theoretical teaching.

The 21½‑month full‑time, BSc / Master of Midwifery (MMID) Shortened Programme at the University of Hertfordshire commences on 6 January 2025 and concludes on 28 August 2026. You will be employed on a fixed‑term contract for the duration of the course.

Course Consists Of
  • 50 practice weeks across community, low‑risk birth centre, high‑risk labour ward, ante‑ and post‑natal wards and maternity theatres. Each practice week includes 30 hours clinical and 10 hours theory.
  • 8 theory weeks at the university, organised into four 2‑week blocks.
  • 2 weeks personal development time.
  • 9 programme and practice reflection weeks.
  • 10 weeks annual leave over the programme.
  • On completion you will be a competent, caring, evidence‑based midwife capable of delivering effective woman‑centred care for mothers and their families.
Responsibilities
  • Determine and provide programmes of care and support for women and their babies under direct supervision of midwives, ensuring they are appropriate to the needs, contexts, culture and choices of the woman, baby and family; they are made in partnership with the multidisciplinary team and the woman; they are ethical; they are based on best evidence and clinical judgement; and they involve other practitioners when this will improve health outcomes.
  • Care for and monitor women during the puerperium, offering evidence‑based advice and support on baby and self‑care, covering antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal stages.
  • Provide seamless care and interventions in partnership with women and other care providers during the antenatal period, ensuring the care is appropriate, promotes continuing health and well‑being, evidence‑based, consistent with risk management and optimises health outcomes through the use of others’ skills.
  • Refer women who would benefit from the skills and knowledge of other individuals to an appropriately skilled professional at the earliest possible time, supported by accurate, legible and complete information that contains the reasoning behind the referral and describes the woman’s needs and preferences.
