B7 Physician Assistant - Fixed term 12 months

The Physician Assistant will be employed by Surrey and Borders Partnership NHS Foundation Trust and will work in the Community Mental Health Recovery Service (CMHRS) according to the timetable in the job plan. The clinical supervisor will undertake 3-monthly reviews to oversee and support the development of the post-holder, with support from the Associate Medical Director.

Registration and Professional Standards

The post holder is expected to take full accountability for the care they provide and must adhere to Good Medical Practice and the professional standards set out by the General Medical Council (GMC). Applicants must have passed the PANE, it is expected the candidate to be formally registered with the GMC (General Medical Council) at the time of application.

Physician Assistant will working within the trust are covered by Department of Health 2012 Clinical Negligence Scheme for Trusts (CNST), like other staff members.

Subject to reasonable adjustments in respect of any disability, candidates must possess a valid driving licence and be able to drive and have the unrestricted use of a car or motorcycle for work at all times including community based work.

Main duties of the job

Clinical: The key duties and responsibilities of the individual appointed to the CMHRS team will include:

Comprehensive assessment of patients referred to the service, including but not limited to full psychiatric history; mental state examination; cognitive examination where appropriate; interpretation of medical investigations such as ECG and blood results; collateral history taking; psychiatric formulation; risk assessment; differential diagnosis.

This role has a focus on the physical healthcare of patients under the care of CMHRS and the PA is expected to play an important role in managing all aspects. This might involve regular monitoring, ensuring investigations are done, appropriate onward referrals or further investigations. This is in conjunction with and under the supervision of the consultants in the team.

Implementation of management plans under supervision of a consultant psychiatrist.

Review of patients under care of CMHRS including but not limited to assessment of mental state; review and interpretation of medical and nursing notes; discussion with relevant clinical teams both in community, wards and patient family members to form an impression of the patient's progress.

Recognise high risk situations, communicate concerns effectively and summon appropriate help in a timely manner.
