Overview
This is an exciting opportunity for an assistant psychologist to join an established and innovative cancer psychological service in East Yorkshire. The successful post-holder will work as part of an MDT with a range of professionals including clinical and counselling psychologists and CBT therapists and will become an integral part of this team. There will be opportunities for one-to-one work with patients, co-facilitation of groups and involvement in service development projects. The post holder will also spend 4 hours per week as part of the Active Together team to deliver psychological aspects of a prehabilitation and rehabilitation programme for patients on a curative cancer pathway. The Active Together service is a multimodal programme developed by AWRC at Sheffield Hallam University and funded by Yorkshire Cancer Research, delivered in Hull in collaboration with Yorkshire Cancer Research and Hull University Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust (HUTH).

Main duties and responsibilities
Patient Care / Clinical Services
- Manage a caseload of patients presenting with cancer distress.
- Deliver level 2 psychological interventions with supervision from a clinical psychologist.
- Work as part of an MDT, attend weekly referral meetings, and participate in CPD events, business meetings, service development, and clinical supervision.
- Be involved in group work and project/service development, including ongoing initiatives such as a virtual reality project within oncology and a project within the Teenage and Young People (TYA) cancer unit.
- Contribute to the Active Together programme, working alongside a senior counsellor to establish psychological service provision and provide teaching and training to other professionals; facilitate group work as required.
- Provide specialist advice and training for different audiences under direction of a clinical psychologist; maintain agreed standards and complete record keeping.
Knowledge, Training and Experience
- Apply knowledge from a psychology degree and clinically supervised experience with patients who have physical and mental health conditions.
Leadership / Management Responsibilities and Development
- Deliver training to other staff under supervision (e.g., training ward staff on psychological management of patients).
Communications
- Provide and receive complex and sensitive information with patients, families and staff through face-to-face meetings, written reports, and multidisciplinary meetings.
- Communicate condition-related information to staff to increase understanding and support participation in rehabilitation.
- Demonstrate skills to respond to highly distressed patients and family members and manage verbal aggression professionally.
Analytical Skills
- Assess and treat patients on a 1:1 basis and within groups, using evidence-based research.
Planning and Organisational Skills
- Plan, prioritise and organise clinical and research workload under supervision of a clinical psychologist.
Physical Skills
- Have standard keyboard skills and be able to use psychometric test equipment; travel across sites as necessary.
Service Development and Improvement
- Follow Trust and departmental policies, contribute to proposals, and stay up to date with service and professional policies, procedures and standards.
Financial and Physical Resources
- Book assessment and therapy materials (psychometric tests, electronic resources), handle them with care, and return them promptly.
Information Resources
- Maintain and store patient records per trust and professional guidelines; securely store psychometric materials; produce clear, concise reports for patients, carers, staff and professionals in a timely manner.
Research, Audit and Innovation
- Participate in departmental research under supervision; prepare, carry out and write up relevant research or audits, independently or jointly with other professionals.
Freedom to Act
- Work within the British Psychological Society code of ethics and relevant professional guidelines, and the Trust’s policies, SOPs, under weekly supervision; stay informed about developments in clinical psychology, especially psycho-oncology.
