Job description
Overview

The Cancer Pharmacist Team at UHDB has a long-standing reputation for proactive and innovative work, effective use of cutting-edge technology, and responsiveness to implementing new treatments into the Trust. The team operates across multiple sites with true collaborative cross-site working, providing exceptional care to patients undergoing chemotherapy in outpatient and inpatient settings. The team includes non-medical prescribers who support clinicians in chemotherapy clinics, independently prescribing SACT, managing toxicities, and advising patients. Their contribution has reduced clinician workload, waiting times, and improved patient experience. The Trust recognises the team’s significant impact on cancer care delivery and continues to invest in maintaining excellent care.

The successful post holders will operate within a hybrid-role model, combining traditional pharmacist duties with non-medical prescribing, with 0.5 WTE dedicated to each aspect of the role. This is a cross-site post; successful post holders will be expected to work across Royal Derby Hospital and Queens Burton Hospital as required.

Responsibilities
  • Providing leadership to the cancer pharmacy team.
  • Managing and supervising the duties of pharmacists, pre-registration pharmacists and technicians within the team.
  • Providing a high-quality clinical ward-based service.
  • Participating in multidisciplinary ward rounds.
  • Clinically checking chemotherapy prescriptions.
  • Supporting the Clinical Trials team in the screening of chemotherapy prescriptions.
  • Answering and advising on drug-related queries.
  • Preparing analysis and commentary on drug expenditure and service delivery models.
  • Project management to support service redesign.
  • Supporting the management of the Trust chemotherapy e-prescribing system (ChemoCare).
  • Participating in Chemotherapy Governance meetings.
  • Participating in the delivery of chemotherapy checking competency training to junior colleagues.
  • Participating in teaching within the multidisciplinary team.
  • Supporting the Divisional Lead Pharmacist in shaping the direction of the team, in line with divisional objectives.
  • Once qualification is obtained, support outpatient chemotherapy clinics as a non-medical prescriber:
  • Clinically assess patient for suitability for chemotherapy.
  • Advise and counsel patients on the best use of medication.
  • Manage toxicities and provide holistic support.
  • Attend MDTs related to the chosen specialty.
  • Take part in research and development projects to improve patient experience and service delivery.
