Overview

Adult’s Best Interest Assessor  | Team: DoLS  | Location: Blackburn

Details

There is potential for this post to become a 6 months contract and until March 2026.

Responsibilities
  • Join the Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards (DoLS) Team to assess mental capacity across care homes and hospitals.
  • Provide independent scrutiny of the care plans in place for individuals deprived of their liberty and ensure they have the legal safeguards in place.
  • Typically allocated 3-4 assessments per week (for full-time), including urgent and complex cases; complete in-person high-quality assessments and make well-informed, best interest decisions within the framework of DoLS.
  • Provide recommendations about the authorisation of care arrangements amounting to a deprivation of liberty.
  • Offer advice to individuals and their families, professionals and partner agencies about the Mental Capacity Act and the Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards.
Requirements / Qualifications
  • Minimum of two years experience.
  • In-depth knowledge of the Mental Capacity Act 2005 and Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards and relevant case law.
  • Confidence in assessment and decision-making skills, including experience of completing mental capacity assessments and producing high-quality reports to meet deadlines.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills with the ability to communicate clearly about the rights of individuals under assessment; ability to communicate with a range of professionals and care providers.
  • Access to/use of a vehicle is an essential requirement.
  • DIPSW or equivalent qualification in Social Work.
  • Social Work England registration.
  • Enhanced and in-date DBS certificate.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to make good decisions based on information available.
  • Ability to work independently as well as within/contribute to a team/multi-agency set ups.
  • Competent IT skills and the ability to navigate electronic file/recording systems.
  • Ability to write clear, concise, and robust assessment/reports/files.
  • Flexible approach to work and working hours when the need arises.
