Purpose of the role
Ensure the accurate processing, recording and completion of all accounts information and supporting the Brand Financial Controller in maintaining effective financial control of the business in line with all required JCT600 and legislative policies.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and support the Accounts team consisting of our Credit Controller, Purchase Ledger Controller and Accounts Assistant. Undertaking monthly one to one catch ups and annual reviews.
- Oversee core transactional accounts processes including but not limited to bank reconciliation reviews, approving purchase invoices, reviewing weekly payment runs, approving bank payments and completing monthly finance house reconciliations.
- Be the point of escalation for all accounts related queries from your team and the wider business.
- Prepare, process and keep a record of monthly accounting journals including but not limited to accruals, prepayments, stock, payroll, fixed assets, revenue and expenses.
- Manage the entire VLS Balance Sheet in line with JCT600 Group requirements, preparing all monthly reconciliations and investigating all issues in a timely manner.
- Undertake monthly variance analysis on overheads, comparing to prior year and forecasts.
- Perform monthly sales and purchase ledger reviews with your team, identifying old or concerning balances for escalation to the Financial Controller.
- Submit a quarterly VAT return to our central Group Accounts department.
- Assist with the production of the year-end accounts pack including the debtors’ analysis and tax pack.
- Provide data and analysis during the annual budgeting exercise, particularly for overheads.
- Ensure that all accounting and administrative tasks within your area of responsibility are carried out in line with company procedures.
- Be a key point of contact during the annual external audit and annual funder audits.
- To continually evaluate and identify opportunities for process improvements within the Accounts department, keeping process notes up to date.
- Liaise with our IT team during system upgrades to ensure accounting functions are operational.
- To work closely with key internal stakeholders and to escalate any concerns to senior management.
- To provide cover and support for the Credit Controller, Purchase Ledger Controller and Accounts Assistant.
- To personify the Company Values at all times and contribute to the motivation, performance and behaviours of the Accounts team.
The Successful Applicant Will
- Ideally be an ambitious part qualified accountant (ACA/ACCA/CIMA) aiming to finish their qualification in the next few years.
- Have experience within sales ledger, purchase ledger and general accounts administration in a fast-paced systems orientated environment.
- Have previous experience posting month end journals and reconciling balance sheet accounts.
- Have strong knowledge of GAAP/IFRS policies.
- Naturally fit within our vibrant and customer centric culture

- Excellent attention to detail with a methodical approach and ordered record keeping.
- Strong organisational skills.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Excellent IT skills and systems experience, including Microsoft Excel.

- Ability to quickly build strong relationships.
- Ability to work under pressure and to tight deadlines.
- Desire to want to learn and develop through our internal programmes and accountancy qualifications training agreement.
