Role and responsibilities

We are seeking a dynamic and visionary Nurse Director to join the senior leadership team at the Western General Hospital, driving excellence in patient care, professional practice, and operational delivery. This post provides an exciting and rewarding opportunity for the right leader. The Associate Nurse Director supports, both clinically and strategically, a plan for nursing practice and services across the site, and cancer services across Lothian, to support reform and sustainability. Our Associate Nurse Director will be acting as a visible role model and advocate for nursing excellence. As an experienced leader you will foster a culture of continuous learning and collaboration to drive patient centred care and prioritise staff wellbeing. We are looking for a dynamic and results driven individual with a proven track record to join our team.

This post provides an exciting opportunity for a compassionate leader. Your leadership will be pivotal in:

  • Delivering our nursing strategy
  • Driving quality improvement, patient safety, person centred compassionate care and supporting clinical governance initiatives
  • Creating an inclusive, supportive environment that empowers our nursing teams, maximises and values their professional contribution, and supports retention

Above all, we are looking for a leader who embodies our values and can inspire, challenge, and drive forward a culture of high performance and compassionate care.

Strategic context

Communities, Realising our Ambitions is our Nursing and Midwifery Strategic Plan 2023-2028. It sets our vision and five key ambitions for the next five years. It describes the key deliverables necessary to build the foundations that will support and empower nurses and midwives to shape a sustainable future and drive improvements in best practice within our own professional community and for the communities we serve. The plan has been developed with and for the Nursing and Midwifery workforce. It is based on the principle that everyone is a leader, from our healthcare support workers who lead patients through their care journey to Nursing and Midwifery Directors leading communities of practice and multiple teams.

This plan underpins our ambitions for NHS Lothian to become a great place to work and a great place to be cared for. Our Strategic Plan sets out the Vision, Ambitions and Values that we believe enables excellent care for our patients and those who use our services. It also demonstrates what our nurses and midwives can expect from the NHS Lothian and what they can aspire to in their own career development. A compassionate, person focused approach is at the very centre of everything we aspire to achieve and what we believe is necessary to deliver care that is high quality, safe and effective.
