Not funded by a EU programme Is the Job related to staff position within a Research Infrastructure? No

Offer Description

Joining the Bureau de Recherches Géologiques et Minières (BRGM) means becoming part of the leading public establishment in the Earth sciences, bringing together 1,000 expert and enthusiastic professionals in 29 entities located in mainland France and overseas.

BRGM's mission is to provide geological knowledge and an understanding of soil and subsoil phenomena, with one overriding objective: to meet the challenges of environmental change through innovative projects that have a major impact on society.

The Subsurface Knowledge and Geomodelling Directorate (DCGS) of BRGM is responsible for acquiring, consolidating, and delivering knowledge about the structures, geometries, properties, resources, and risks of the national subsurface in the form of geomodels.

It provides expertise in the acquisition, processing, interpretation, analysis, and representation of geological, geophysical, geochemical, and hydrogeological data.

Additionally, it serves as the repository for all subsurface data, information, and knowledge, ensuring their interpretation and delivery within shared reference frameworks as 3D/4D geological models, which underpin thematic studies in water, geo-resources, and energy transition.

You will work within this Directorate in the Geophysics Division, which comprises around 45 geophysicists and is organized into two distinct units: Geophysics and Remote Sensing for the Near Surface (GTS) and Geophysics and Remote Sensing for the Deep Subsurface (GTP).

The position to be filled is within the GTS Unit.

This team's mission is to deploy and develop innovative geophysical and satellite methods for imaging geological objects at all scales, monitoring subsurface energy and non-energy resources, mineral resources, and natural and anthropogenic hazards.

Its work encompasses expertise, support for public policies, and high value-added services.

To support and strengthen its gravimetry activities, BRGM is seeking a Research Geophysicist specialized in gravimetry, including both regional and micro-gravimetry.

Within the Geophysics and Remote Sensing for the Near Surface Unit (DCGS/GTS), you will participate in activities ranging from specialized high value-added services to research in applied or experimental geophysics.

The position will primarily focus on continuing ongoing projects, including urban micro-gravimetry initiatives, the French Mineral Resources Inventory, and European research projects on new quantum gravimetric sensors.

In these projects, as well as in future initiatives, you will be involved from the project design stage, proposing innovative solutions and acquisition configurations tailored to the issues at hand. Preparing solid proposals and high-quality technical offers will be a key responsibility, followed by hands-on work with the equipment (gravimeters and dGPS) required for carrying out geophysical acquisitions, in which you will actively participate.

BRGM utilizes both industry-standard tools for data processing and develops its own software solutions, whose performance contributes to its national and international reputation.

Beyond these missions, a scientific research contribution is expected, both to support ongoing research projects (particularly in quantum gravimetry) and to propose new research directions.

You will also be expected to contribute to scientific dissemination, including publications, conference presentations, and other platforms, of gravimetry-related work.

Starting date : 01/02/2026
Type of contract : Permanent CDI
Qualification : Master Degree
Experience : 1 – 5 years

Required skills and qualities:
- Solid knowledge of geophysical methods (electrical/electromagnetic, induced polarization, magnetism, RMP, gravimetry, seismics), with a specialization in gravimetry.
- Ability to work autonomously in the acquisition, processing, and interpretation of gravimetric data (regional and micro-gravimetry).
- Mastery of all stages of data processing, an essential prerequisite for this position.
- Familiarity with gravimeters and topographic equipment required for measurements.
- Interest in issues related to anthropogenic risks (notably cavities).
- Numerical analysis and programming skills (proficiency in one or more of the following languages: Matlab, Python, C, C++, Fortran, COMSOL).
- Active in knowledge dissemination and innovation.
- Strong listening and collaborative skills in partnership contexts.
- Strong teamwork and organizational abilities.
- Interest in fieldwork and active participation in team life.
- Strong synthesis and proven writing skills for publications.
- Autonomy, rigor, initiative, solidarity, and organizational sense.
- Proficiency in written and spoken English (e.g., TOEIC over 860).

Specific Requirements

This full-time position involves travel, including medium- to long-term field assignments in France and abroad (generally 1 to 3 weeks).

In an environment that is conducive to work/life balance, thanks in particular to teleworking, BRGM stands out for its caring and friendly atmosphere.
