Backend Engineering Team Manager

This position is posted by Jobgether on behalf of a partner company. We are currently looking for a Backend Engineering Team Manager in France. In this role, you will lead and mentor a backend engineering team within a modern, remote-first technology environment. You will balance people leadership with technical guidance, ensuring smooth execution of complex projects while fostering individual growth and team cohesion. Working closely with Product and Design, you will help turn strategic roadmaps into reliable, scalable solutions delivered iteratively with customer impact in mind. You will play a key role in hiring, onboarding, and developing talent, while continuously improving processes suited to a globally distributed setup. This position offers the opportunity to influence both delivery excellence and engineering culture in a fast-growing, international context. It is well suited for an experienced backend leader who enjoys enabling others to succeed and thrive.

Accountabilities
  • Lead, support, and coach a team of backend engineers, focusing on delivery quality, professional growth, and continuous improvement
  • Align team execution with broader engineering vision and strategy in collaboration with senior leadership
  • Guide engineers in technical decision-making while ensuring effective processes and predictable delivery
  • Define delivery estimates, track progress, remove blockers, and support the team through challenges
  • Collaborate closely with Product and Design to deliver roadmap commitments iteratively and with strong customer focus
  • Own recruitment, hiring, and onboarding activities to scale and strengthen the team
  • Conduct regular one-on-one meetings, set goals, review performance, and provide ongoing feedback
  • Promote strong documentation practices, knowledge sharing, and open communication
  • Foster an inclusive, empathetic, and collaborative team culture across diverse backgrounds
  • Contribute to refining ways of working in a remote-first, globally distributed environment
Requirements
  • 7+ years of experience in advanced software development, including at least 2+ years in an engineering leadership role
  • Bachelors or Masters degree in Computer Science or a related discipline, or equivalent practical experience
  • Strong backend engineering background with technologies such as Ruby or Python, and sufficient depth to support senior engineers
  • Solid knowledge of databases, with PostgreSQL preferred, as well as caching systems like Redis or Memcached
  • Experience with background processing systems such as Sidekiq or similar tools
  • Strong grasp of software engineering fundamentals, best practices, and problem-solving approaches
  • Familiarity with testing strategies, CI / CD pipelines, and a focus on maintainable, high-quality code
  • Understanding of scalability, reliability, observability, security principles, and incident response practices
  • Proven ability to lead teams through execution, resolve blockers, and ensure delivery commitments
  • Excellent communication, organization, and stakeholder management skills across Engineering, Product, and Design
  • A confident, detail-oriented, and motivated mindset with a strong sense of ownership and collaboration
