Systems Development Manager, ESC Managed Operations

AWS is set to introduce the inaugural European Sovereign Cloud (ESC), marking a significant development in utility computing (UC). To spearhead this initiative, we are actively seeking experienced development engineering leaders with a strong background in both development management and operations expertise. As part of the AWS Managed Operations team, you will play a pivotal role in building and leading operations and development teams dedicated to delivering high‑availability AWS services, including EC2, S3, Dynamo, Lambda, and Bedrock, exclusively for EU customers. Eligibility requirement
  • Fluency in written and spoken English is required.
  • Candidate must be a national of an EU member state and residing in the EU to operate the AWS European Sovereign Cloud.
  • Amazon will provide relocation support for successful applicants relocating within the European Union.
  • Employees will participate in an On‑Call rota.
Key job responsibilities
  • Lead your team in executing organizational and team roadmaps, focusing on automation goals.
  • Regular check‑ins and strategic guidance to foster collaboration and shared success.
  • Analyse systems and software performance, identifying areas for improvement and shaping strategies to enhance overall efficiency.
  • Cross‑departmental collaboration is key, strengthening relationships with other teams and streamlining processes for optimal team functioning.
  • Build coaching and mentoring teams to ensure a skilled and invested workforce.
  • Regularly review key performance metrics to ensure the team's efforts align with overarching business objectives, fostering a results‑driven environment.
  • Identify successes and areas for improvement, ensuring your teams are well‑prepared for launch challenges and opportunities.
  • This position may involve on‑call responsibility, you will be required to drive escalation calls.

Basic Qualifications
  • National of an EU member state.
  • Bachelor of Science in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics or equivalent work experience.
  • Demonstrated Software Development or Systems experience, including hands‑on development work and object‑oriented design, plus a proven track record of high‑scale hiring and talent management across teams of multiple disciplines.
  • Systems engineering experience (virtualization, hardware design, operating system tuning), experience building scalable infrastructure software or distributed systems.
  • Knowledge of professional software engineering practices and best practices for the full software development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering or equivalent.
  • Strong engineering fundamentals (networking, network services, operating systems).
  • Leading development life cycle processes and best practices, especially in deployment automation and monitoring.
  • Strong program and product management skills.
  • Experience with distributed systems at scale, including AWS platforms, services and design patterns.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong sense of ownership, including an ability to promote operational excellence.
