About the Role

As a Principal Engineer and Senior Engineering Manager at Swiss Re, you'll serve as both a technical visionary and strategic leader. You'll establish engineering excellence across multiple teams while providing architectural guidance that shapes our entire technology ecosystem. You'll foster a culture of innovation and technical mastery while guiding teams through complex enterprise-level challenges and ensuring the delivery of scalable, resilient systems that drive our business forward.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead and mentor multiple engineering teams, creating a collaborative environment that fosters innovation and technical excellence
  • Define technical strategy and architectural vision aligned with business objectives across the organization
  • Establish and evangelize engineering best practices including design patterns, Domain-Driven Design (DDD), and agile methodologies at scale
  • Partner with executives and cross‑functional leaders to shape product roadmaps and technical direction
  • Drive architectural decisions that ensure scalability, security, and resilience across multiple systems
  • Spearhead technical innovation by identifying emerging technologies and methodologies that create competitive advantages
  • Resolve complex technical challenges that span multiple domains and systems
  • Oversee the design and implementation of highly‑available, high‑traffic, mission‑critical services
  • Cultivate engineering talent through mentorship programs and career development initiatives

We are looking for candidates who meet these requirements:

  • Extensive engineering leadership experience building, mentoring, and scaling high‑performing product engineering teams
  • Deep expertise in software architecture, system design principles, and enterprise‑level architectural patterns
  • Proven track record designing and implementing highly secure, reliable, and resilient distributed systems at scale
  • Experience establishing technical standards and engineering practices across multiple teams
  • Strong strategic thinking with the ability to align technical decisions with business objectives
  • Outstanding communication skills with the ability to influence senior stakeholders and translate complex technical concepts for diverse audiences
  • Demonstrated success leading large‑scale technical initiatives and driving organizational change
  • Proficiency in English
Nice to Haves
  • Advanced knowledge of multiple programming paradigms and languages (Java, dotNET, Typescript, etc.) and cloud‑native architectures
  • Expertise with complex distributed systems (microservices architecture, event‑driven systems, distributed databases)
  • Experience implementing sophisticated engineering practices (CI/CD pipelines, observability frameworks, chaos engineering)
  • Track record of technical innovation and thought leadership within the industry
  • Experience mentoring technical leaders and establishing engineering career frameworks

For Spain, the base salary range for this position is between EUR 98,000 and EUR 163,000 (for a full‑time role). The specific salary offered considers:

  • the requirements, scope, complexity and responsibilities of the role
  • the applicant's own profile including education/qualifications, expertise, specialisation, skills and experience

In addition to your base salary, Swiss Re offers an attractive performance‑based variable compensation component, designed to recognise your achievements. Further you will enjoy a variety of global and location specific benefits.

Eligibility may vary depending on the terms of Swiss Re policies and your employment contract.
