A leading marine research institute in Kiel seeks a motivated researcher for a position focused on assessing the environmental impacts of deep-seabed mining. Candidates should hold a Master's degree in natural sciences and possess good knowledge of biogeochemical processes and mathematical analysis methods. GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel is a foundation under public law jointly financed by the Federal Republic of Germany (90%) and the State of Schleswig-Holstein (10%). It is one of the internationally leading institutions in the field of marine research. Through our research and our commitment to the transfer of knowledge and technology, we contribute significantly to the preservation of the function and protection of the ocean for future generations. The European project MiningImpact investigates the impacts of deep-sea mining on the marine ecosystem and its functions. Scientific results contribute to international regulations for seabed mineral exploitation. Within this project the research unit Marine Geosystems of the research division Marine Biogeochemistry is offering the following position starting as soon as possible. The position offers the possibility to attain a doctoral degree in natural sciences.
You will perform a comparison of the environmental impacts of deep-seabed mining and conventional land-based mining operations applying a recently developed metric. You will utilize the full breadth of data from polymetallic nodule ecosystems collected by the MiningImpact project, including new data from an upcoming expedition. You will apply state-of-the-art numerical and statistical models to assess impacts on biogeochemical processes and ecosystem health. You will interact with colleagues in an inter- and transdisciplinary research environment. You will publish your results in international peer-reviewed journals and present them at international conferences and workshops.

The position offers the possibility to attain a doctoral degree in natural sciences. The position is available for a period of 36 months. The salary depends on qualification and could be up to the class E13 (TVöD-Bund) of the German tariff for public employees. This is a part-time position according to 75% of a full-time equivalent. The position cannot be split. Flexible work-time models are possible.
