As a Senior Software Engineer – Backend (m/f/d) at bex, you will be a key member of our engineering team, working together to efficiently solve the challenges of last-mile construction logistics. We value collaboration but also expect strong individual contributions that drive our product and technical excellence forward. You will work with a high level of ownership – You build it, you run it – in a modern tech stack including Kotlin, Ktor, Exposed, PostgreSQL, Kafka, Docker, and Google Cloud Platform, supported by AI coding tools. You’ll work directly with stakeholder teams (e.g. Operations, Customer, Sales) to understand their needs and translate them into impactful technical solutions – without a dedicated product or DevOps layer in between. Your responsibilities include:
- Design, implement, and operate robust backend services and APIs that form the core of our digital platform.
- Develop and maintain an event-driven architecture based on Kafka and messaging patterns.
- Take ownership of architectural decisions, technical direction, and operational stability.
- Drive the usage of AI services within our platform.
- Ensure high code quality, clean architecture, and reliable processes.
- Work closely with stakeholder teams to translate business requirements into scalable backend solutions.
- Degree in Computer Science, Business Informatics, or equivalent qualification.
- At least 5 years of relevant experience in software development with a strong focus on backend systems.
- Solid knowledge of modern JVM technologies – ideally Kotlin with Ktor or Spring Boot.
- Experience with event-driven architectures and messaging systems such as Kafka.
- Proficient with relational databases (e.g. PostgreSQL).
- Understanding of clean API design, efficient data structures, and performance optimization.
- Enjoys direct collaboration with stakeholders and taking ownership of end-to-end product outcomes.
- First practical experiences with using AI tooling during development and with integrating AI services into a product.
- Strong problem-solving skills, collaborative mindset, and proactive attitude.
- Excellent German (B2) and English (C1) skills.
