A major research organization in Germany seeks a Data Scientist to optimize scientific data flows for the High-Luminosity Large Hadron Collider. The role involves collaboration with physicists, developing dCache systems, and enhancing data access across distributed infrastructures. Candidates should have a Master's degree in relevant fields, proficient in Linux, Java, and Python, with experience in distributed data systems. Flexible working hours and a supportive environment are offered.
Work group: IT
Area of research: Scientific / postdoctoral posts, IT - EDV

DESY
This project focuses on analysing and optimising scientific data flows in preparation for the High-Luminosity Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC). It addresses the growing data management and processing demands of future LHC experiments by developing scalable strategies for efficient data access, distribution, and storage across distributed computing infrastructures. The central component of this project is dCache. dCache.org is an international collaboration of computer scientists providing open source software for storing and retrieving huge amounts of data distributed among a large number of heterogeneous server nodes, under a single virtual filesystem tree with a variety of standard access methods, including NFSv4.1 (pNFS), WebDAV and FTP protocols. dCache.org products are in use around the world by a large variety of scientific communities. The software is written in Java using a microservice-like architecture and based on widely adopted components, like Jetty, Spring, Zookeeper, Apache Kafka and others. The German section of dCache.org is part of DESY IT. DESY operates multiple instances of dCache providing more than 150 PiB of data and each is part of worldwide interconnected scientific communities with about 10 000 users. The successful candidate will design and evaluate data processing pipelines, contribute to the development of dCache, and collaborate closely with international research groups. This position offers an opportunity to work at the intersection of large-scale data systems, advanced computing technologies, and experimental particle physics – contributing directly to the success of next‑generation scientific discoveries at the HL‑LHC.
Look forward to a unique working environment on our international research campus. Respectful cooperation and the well‑being of our DESY employees are particularly important to us. Gender equality is an important aspect for us. To support work–life balance we offer flexible working hours, variable part‑time, job‑sharing models and participation in mobile work (up to 50 %). You will benefit from our family‑friendly and collegial atmosphere, our established health management and occupational pension provision. As a public funded employer, we offer you a secure workplace and facilitate your individual career with our comprehensive training and development opportunities. Remuneration is according to the regulations of the TV‑AVH. DESY offers its employees a financial supplement for a German job ticket (Deutschland‑Ticket) at both locations.
