Jobbeschreibung
Overview

The Faculty of Medicine at Leipzig University and the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology (MPI-EVA) jointly invite applications for a Professorship in population genetics in the field of evolutionary anthropology and medicine (W2) to be filled at the earliest possible date.

Responsibilities

The professorship will represent the field of population genetics in both research and teaching. Its focus is on the data-driven analysis of population genetic processes using modern and ancient genomic data, with particular emphasis on medically relevant genetic questions. Research topics include the modeling of population histories, the investigation of natural selection (for example in the context of disease resistance), the estimation of kinship and social structures, and the development of population genetic methods for the analysis of medically relevant genomic data. The professorship is a joint appointment of the Faculty of Medicine at Leipzig University and the MPI-EVA under the so-called Aachen model (part-time leave model). The position will therefore be shared equally between the two institutions, with 0.5 FTE based at the Faculty of Medicine and 0.5 FTE as a part-time W2 research group leader based at the MPI-EVA. It is intended to strengthen the bridge between basic research and university teaching, while fostering links with related disciplines such as medical genetics, archaeogenetics, evolutionary genetics, human genetics, and primate evolution. The professorship is also expected to contribute actively to teaching at both the bachelor’s and master’s levels, in particular within the to-be newly established Master’s program in Evolutionary Anthropology.

Appointment details and facilities

The position offers substantial core funding to support an independent research group. Office and laboratory space will be provided both at Leipzig University and at the MPI-EVA. Furthermore, the MPI-EVA provides access to state-of-the-art high-throughput DNA sequencing technologies and powerful computational resources.

Qualifications

Applicants are expected to have completed a university degree, preferably in a natural science and/or medically oriented discipline, as well as a doctoral degree and habilitation or an equivalent academic qualification. They must also demonstrate university teaching experience and proven teaching aptitude. Further requirements include a strong record of high-quality publications, successful acquisition of third-party funding, and methodological expertise and research experience in the fields of evolutionary biology, anthropology, and/or medical basic or clinical research. Research interests that complement those of Leipzig University and the MPI-EVA are particularly desirable.

Legal framework and university policy

The rights and obligations associated with the position are defined by the Saxon Higher Education Act (SächsHSG) and the Regulation on Academic Service Duties (HSDAVO). Applicants must fulfill the appointment requirements in accordance with § 59 SächsHSG.

Equity and diversity

Leipzig University and the Max Planck Society are committed to increasing the proportion of women in research and teaching, and therefore strongly encourage qualified female scientists to apply. Severely disabled applicants will be given preference if they are equally qualified.

Application process

Applications must be submitted within six weeks of the publication of this advertisement exclusively via Leipzig University’s appointment portal at: www.uni-leipzig.de/berufungen

Application documents will also be made available to representatives of the MPI-EVA. Representatives appointed by the MPI and the university will participate in the interviews. By submitting your application, you consent to the processing of your personal data for the purposes of this appointment procedure, which may be withdrawn at any time. Further information on data protection for applicants is provided in the appointment portal.
