Professor (w/m/d) of German Didactics (W3)
Reference number: P342/25
Should the legal requirements for civil‑servant status be fulfilled, the successful applicant will be appointed as a civil servant on a tenured professorship (W3 on the German salary scale for university professors).
The applicant is expected to teach and conduct research related to the field of German Didactics across different levels of the educational system from lower secondary education (Sekundarstufe I) to upper secondary education (Sekundarstufe II) with an innovation‑driven focus in the didactics of language, literature, and media. In addition, the applicant is expected to further develop these approaches in cooperation with the lecturers working in the field.
The professorship is located in Faculty 10 (Linguistics and Literary Studies) and integrated into the department of German Studies, where close collaboration between German Language and Literary Studies and German Didactics is highly valued, especially with regard to teaching. In addition, interdisciplinary cooperation among philologies is conducted through joint research projects and transfer initiatives between the departments of the faculty. The successful applicant is expected to collaborate closely within Faculty 10 in research and teaching, especially with the professorships of German as a Second and Foreign Language, German Linguistics/Interdisciplinary Linguistics, Older and Newer German Literature and Applied Linguistics with the focus on text production research, in addition to other research and teaching cooperatives within Faculty 10 and beyond, such as Faculty 12 (Faculty of Education and Educational Sciences). In addition, the successful applicant is expected to contribute to the acquisition of external research funding.
The professorship is responsible for the training in the didactics of language, literature, and media in the bachelor and M.Ed programmes, as well as participation in professional development programmes for German teachers in secondary schools. In all of these areas, there are further opportunities to shape the scope of the position. Participation in ongoing teaching and research projects in the education sector in Bremen is welcomed, especially with regard to the didactics of writing and reading (e.g., "Bremer Leseband").
Applicants are required to have completed a relevant academic university degree (German Didactics for Secondary Education or comparable), to demonstrate pedagogical competence, to hold a doctorate relevant to the field, and to have produced additional academic work and publications in the specified subfields. Such work may have been attained in the context of a post‑doctoral qualification (Habilitation), an assistant professorship (Juniorprofessur), or outside the university sector.
Only candidates who can provide evidence of at least three years practical experience in schools are eligible for appointment to the professorship. The appointment will be made in accordance with § 18 of the Bremen Higher Education Act (BremHG) and § 116 of the Bremen Civil Service Act (BremBG). Extensive teaching experience in the relevant subject area, demonstrated teaching proficiency at university level, and a strong commitment to higher education teaching are therefore required.
Courses are to be conducted in German; multilingualism is generally welcomed. Desired qualifications include experience with innovative, media‑supported teaching and learning formats, the consideration of diversity perspectives in research and teaching, and engagement with the concept of inclusion. A willingness to pursue professional development in higher education didactics is required. Participation in academic self‑government is expected. Candidates should also be willing to contribute to cross‑departmental responsibilities in teacher education (including participation in the Centre for Teacher Education and Educational Research).
The University of Bremen offers a variety of services to support newly appointed faculty, including a Welcome Centre, childcare options, dual‑career support, and opportunities for professional and personal development.

We are especially committed to increasing the proportion of women in leadership positions and explicitly encourage women to apply.
