The professional registered nurse Outpatient RN CAP 1 is an entry level designation into the Clinical Advancement Program (CAP). This position is accountable for providing and coordinating clinically competent care, including assessment, planning, intervention, and evaluation for an assigned group of patients. It may include delegating appropriate tasks to direct patient care staff such as RNs, LVN / LPNs, and Patient Care Technicians. As part of the End Stage Kidney Disease (ESKD) healthcare team, this role participates in decision-making, teaching, leadership, and quality improvement activities to enhance patient outcomes and facility operations.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES :

All duties are performed according to Fresenius Kidney Care policies, procedures, standards of nursing practice, and regulations.

  • Performs essential functions under supervision and guidance from the Clinical Educator, Preceptor, or collaborating RNs.
  • Collects and analyzes patient data pre-, during, and post-hemodialysis, documents in medical records, adjusts treatment plans as needed, and communicates with the healthcare team.
  • Provides education to patients and families based on assessed learning needs.
  • Delivers safe and effective hemodialysis therapy in collaboration with care staff.
  • Administers medications as prescribed, documents medical justifications, and monitors effectiveness.
  • Assists with emergency response measures when necessary.
  • Participates in staff training, orientation, and acts as a resource for the healthcare team.
  • Ensures proper laboratory procedures are followed and manages missed laboratory collections.
  • Documents patient outcomes, updates nursing assessments, and collaborates on care plans.
  • Provides information on transplant and treatment options to patients.
  • Completes CAP requirements for advancement.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS :

This role involves physical activities including heavy lifting, patient mobility assistance, prolonged standing, and equipment handling up to 200 lbs. The environment is a healthcare setting with typical hazards, including potential exposure to infectious materials. Reasonable accommodations are provided as needed.

  • Involves desk work, computer use, and interaction with patients and staff.
  • May require travel to training sites or other facilities.
  • Must pass the Ishihara Color Blindness test; accommodations considered if failed.

SUPERVISION :

Supervision of Patient Care Technicians / LPNs / LVNs / RNs as a Team Leader or Nurse in Charge is contingent upon:

  • Completion of Fresenius Kidney Care training requirements.
  • Minimum of 9 months RN experience.
  • Minimum of 3 months in chronic/acute hemodialysis as an RN.

EDUCATION and LICENSURE :

  • Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing.
  • Current CPR/BLS certification.
  • Practice licensure as required by the state.

EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS :

  • Entry level for RNs with less than 1 year nephrology nursing experience in the last two years.
  • Preferred minimum of 9 months RN experience and hemodialysis experience.
