Overview

Position: Content and Engagement Director (Full Time, Remote)

Organization: civicIQ

Location: Full-time, 100% remote position in the United States (from home or co-working space) with occasional travel once every 2-3 months

Reports to: VP of Community Engagement, Dana Schultz

About civicIQ: To decarbonize at scale and address the climate crisis, civicIQ helps build clean energy infrastructure in rural America by fostering local support and community organizing, backed by data and direct human connection. We partner with developers and media partners to move clean energy projects forward and shift the national narrative about clean energy and its social license.

About the Position: civicIQ seeks a Content and Engagement Director to design and lead our digital content strategy that educates and mobilizes supporters for clean energy projects including solar, wind, transmission, battery storage, and community benefits. This role involves building systems, collaborating across departments, and delivering high-impact content that drives public action in rural communities. You will shape narrative and testing strategy with significant autonomy over content creation, experimentation, and platform execution.

Ideal candidate: a storyteller, strategist, and systems builder who can move people from curiosity to conviction to action. Background in digital organizing, creative strategy, clean energy advocacy, grassroots communications, or content marketing is helpful.

What you could expect to do (key responsibilities):

Responsibilities
  • Content System Design and Execution:
    • Content Creation: Create and publish multimedia content (copy, GIFs, visuals, short-form videos) across SMS, email, video, and social for a rural audience. Build and manage a repeatable content calendar across SMS, email, Facebook Messenger, and organic digital platforms.
    • Strategic & Systems Thinking: Build a content system, develop evergreen flows, content pillars, and high-performing templates to streamline operations.
  • Audience Research and Testing:
    • Launch High-Impact tests: Design and run A/B and multivariate tests to increase engagement and drive conversion.
    • Results Orientation: Deliver outcomes; extract actionable insights to iterate on strategy and messaging.
    • Analytical Curiosity: Eager to test ideas and adapt creative strategies.
  • Campaign Activation:
    • Multi-campaign Management: Coordinate content across 10–12 campaigns per year, including petitions, story shares, and calls to action at local and state levels.
    • Activating Content: Craft content that informs, inspires, and moves supporters to take real-world action (phone calls, public hearings, public comments, engaging with local stakeholders).
    • Campaign Optimization: Time and tailor messages for optimal response and impact.
    • Project Management: Manage deadlines and coordinate with internal and external collaborators.
  • External Partnerships and Landscape Scanning:
    • Partnership Oriented Approach: Work with allied organizations to adapt practices and cross-promote content.
    • Trend-spotter: Monitor trends to keep strategy fresh.
    • Collaborate: Co-create content with local partners and stakeholders to amplify local voices.
    • Strategic Collaborator: Align content with tests, target audiences, and campaign moments with other teams.
    • Clear and Goal-driven Messaging: Ensure messaging supports engagement and project goals.
    • Mission Alignment: Deep interest in local clean energy solutions and empowering communities to lead the transition.
  • Cross-Team Collaboration:
    • Strategic Collaborator: Work with ads, organizing, data, and tech teams to align content with tests and campaigns.
    • Quality Messaging: Ensure clarity and cohesiveness across messaging.
    • Overall Alignment: Reflect mission and goals in communications.

    • Content testing and performance analysis
    • Comfort working across multiple content formats (short-form video, GIFs, carousel posts, audio, SMS scripts)
  • Background in mission-driven communications: Rural audiences, climate/energy, civic engagement, or public interest work
  • Strong stakeholder management: Collaborate with campaigners, designers, advertisers, and organizers
  • Independent and remote work capability: Detail-oriented, self-starter, comfortable with remote teams
  • Proactive, learning mindset
  • Editing skills development: CapCut, Adobe, Canva familiarity is a plus
  • Contractor/influencer management experience is a plus

Salary and Benefits:

  • Salary range: $75,000–$84,000, depending on experience
